Science Olympiad 2017 McAuliffe Middle School

1 Specifics 23 events Saturday February 11, 2017 at UCI
Students will be competing in groups of 2. Students should sign-up by choosing an initial direction Only15 students allowed on the final team.

2 Science Process Skills
2016 Division B Events The 2016 Division B events are listed on Mrs. Lewis’ and Mrs. Neufeld’s website The following are categories of events: Life Science Earth Science Physical Science Engineering Science Process Skills

3 Engineering/ BUILDING EVENTS

4 Bottle Rocket Some Details: 1 Liter bottle or less Must remain in the air as long as possible carrying a raw egg which must remain intact after landing. Teams can bring two rockets but they can only be launched once.

5 Towers Tower must be light weight and be able to hold a load of 15 kg while being tested on an uneven surface.

6 Wright Stuff Free flight rubber powered monoplane Goal: Achieve Maximum time aloft

7 Scrambler Design, build, and test one mechanical device which uses the energy from a falling mass to transport an egg along a track as quickly as possible and stop as close to the center of a barrier without breaking the egg.

8 Mission Possible A Rube Goldberg-like device that raises a flag through a series of simple machines (levers, pulleys, wheel and axles, inclined planes, screws, and wedges)

9 Wind Power Build a blade assembly that consists of any kind of propeller/pinwheel/rotor attached to a compact disc, which will be used to capture wind power. Students will also be tested on their knowledge of alternative energy.

10 Hovercraft Construct a self-propelled air-levitated vehicle with up to two battery powered motors that turn one propeller each to levitate and move the vehicle down the track.

11 PERFORMANCE EVENTS

12 Fast Facts Teams will fill in a grid of terms that begin with a given letter to match given science categories Category Scientist Element Unit of Measure Type of Landform Part of a Cell A Avogardo Aluminum Ampere B Niels Bohr Boron Butte C Marie Curie Carbon Calorie Canyon Cytoplasm D Darwin Dubnium Dram

13 Optics Teams will participate in an activity involving positioning mirrors to direct a laser beam towards a target. They will also be tested on their knowledge of geometric and physical optics.

14 Write it do it One student will write a description of an object and how to build it, and then the other student will attempt to construct the object from this description.

15 Experimental Design Students will design, conduct, and report the findings of an experiment that you conduct on site. This is a team of 3.

16 Crime Busters Students will be given a scenario, a collection of evidence and possible suspects and they will use that information to perform a series of tests in order to solve a crime.

17 Road Scholar - Being able to draw and read maps.
Students will be given directions and they need to find a location using maps. Highway and topographic maps may be from one or more states The event may be presented in a storyline format May be asked to draw features located within a square section on answer sheet using correct features from Testing Area (presented in next few slides) Participants may be asked to draw a topographic map profile that will be included on the answer sheet.

18 These events require studying and practicing tests.
Study Events These events require studying and practicing tests.

19 Meteorology: Severe Weather Emphasis will be on generating inferences, making predictions, problem solving, etc.

20 Microbe Mission Teams will answer questions, solve problems, and analyze date pertaining to microbes.

21 Rocks and Minerals Teams will demonstrate their knowledge of rocks and minerals

22 Disease Detectives Study Event - Students will use their investigative skills to find out environmental causes of diseases – focus is on food borne illness.

23 (Large-scale processes affecting the structure of Earth’s crust)
Dynamic Planet (Large-scale processes affecting the structure of Earth’s crust)

24 Ecology Tundra, Taiga, and Deciduous Forests.

25 Anatomy (Nervous System, Sense Organs, & Endocrine System)

26 Invasive Species Demonstrate knowledge of invasive species in local and national ecosystems.

27 Reach For The Stars Study Event – Students will demonstrate an understanding of the properties and evolution of stars especially star forming regions and supernova remnants.

28 Food Science – Food Grains Answer questions of the chemistry of food and build a simple calorimeter to determine the energy content of a solid foodstuff.
