Common Types of Electrical Cables

An electrical cable is an electrical unit that consists of multiple independent conductive wires.
This cable provides connection and allows power stations, wired computer networks, televisions and telephones to work. There are many types of electrical cables that differ in configuration, size and performance. Below are some of the most widely used cables.

Coaxial Cable Has a woven shield of copper that surrounds the insulating layer and is covered by an outermost plastic sheath. Some types of coaxial cables are hardline, leaky cable, RG-6, twin-axial, tri-axial and semi-rigid.

Ribbon Cable Also called a multi-wire planar electrical cable or flat twin cable. Made up of multiple insulated wires that run parallel to each other. The parallel wires allow the simultaneous transmission of multiple signals of data. The wires are commonly used to interconnect network devices.

Twisted Pair Cable Used for telephone cabling and wiring local area networks. Consists of pairs of insulated copper wires which are twisted around each other. Easy to install, flexible and inexpensive.

Shielded cable Made up of one or more insulated wires that are sealed together by an aluminum Mylar foil or woven braid shielding. The shielding prevents the cable from external radio and power frequency interference and allows signal transmission to proceed smoothly.
