Our Chindogu idea Jack, Leonard, Ryan, Megan, Denholm
2
A brief history of Chindogu
Chindogu is the Japanese art form of the invention of silly or completely useless gadgets and items used to solve everyday problems. Although you may be able to use these gadgets in your day to day life, you’d look pretty silly attempting to use them!
3
Chindogu from around the world
4
A few rejected ideas We started out by brainstorming a few ideas for what our Chindogu product could be, these are just a few of the ideas that we decided we would not progress with due to their impracticality or having already been made before.
6
The product For the final product, our group decided on a pop up Christmas tree, as we are steadily approaching the festive period and it seemed like the best possible idea from our list of ideas. The Christmas tree would come packaged as a basic present, which would then unfold and pitch into an authentic style Christmas tree.
7
The production stage
11
Ideas behind the design
The pop up Christmas tree allows people to easily construct a tree during the festive period. Once Christmas has finished, the tree can then be refolded back to it’s original shape as a present styled box, the main feature that makes this design unique in its Chindogu style is the use of a lot of cardboard and easily flammable materials, meaning the tree could not hold electrical lights or anything that may cause a paper fire.
12
Final production For the final idea we wanted to create an accurate 3D representation of the tree and the folded present itself in order to show people what the tree could look like if we had decided to go ahead with making the tree with raw materials. This is the finished render of the tree and the folded tree in a present and was created using Blender version 2.78a and the use of mix shaders and nodes.
14
Idea branch offs From the main idea of the pop up Christmas tree, we came together and brainstormed some ideas of other Chindogu products that hold some relativity that we could easily manufacture, here are some examples of these ideas:
15
Pop up pumpkin lantern The idea behind this product is that it can be opened and immediately assembled into the pumpkin shape. Includes pumpkin markings on the product to resemble a pumpkin and has space inside to place an orange LED light.
16
Hanging bat Another idea stemming from the pop up Christmas tree is a pop up hanging bat. This is because it’s related to another period of the year (Halloween), which is popular with decorations and is easy to set up.
17
Other festive ideas Following on from the decorations/time of year products another possibility could be a hanging Easter egg. This would work similarly to the pumpkin and can be used at Easter. A pop up cake could be used on birthdays and is similar to the Christmas tree. It could also include sound; and play the ‘happy birthday’ tune.

Marketing What is marketing?
-To clarify ( Marketing is an action or business of promoting/selling products or services. -This includes market research and advertising.
19
‘Broadcast Your Advantage’
-This highlights the need to address how set product is better than others out there. -Chindogu Concept (Link to uniqueness), benefits to marketing-allowing for the buzz/hype around product.
20
‘Make Benefits Easy To Spot’
In essence the more evident the perceived advantages, the more your product will stand out (Market itself). Additionally marketing strategy towards time and location-link to Christmas Season. (Increase in demand/need for set product, would be extremely beneficial.
21
‘Let Customers Try It Out’
Through the use of testing the product, allows for the word to get out about the product-advertising. Allows for a feel of the product/its usefulness and whether or not is complies to what its stated to do. Links-Helps to create a perceived image towards what the product is about.
22
Branding (Todays Society)
Target S.D. Christmas tree towards university students/young adults -e.g. For-University accommodation, young adults living alone or with a partner ( Easy to acquire/use) Cheap alternative/time saver-efficiency of space.
23
Group Performance
24
Conclusion Overall as a group, we feel that the Chindogu object would be completely pointless and quite hysterical to look at in a living room or dining area, we feel that it completely fits the requirements of the Chindogu and we would absolutely not be able to sell very many if production went ahead. If we were to change anything about the objects in order to make them practical, we may have looked at different materials for the tree itself, such as a fire-proof material to ensure safety when in use.
