8 Conventions: Independent and Dependent Clauses
What is a clause? A clause is a collection of words that: Have a subject and a verb The subject is actively doing a verb Ex: after we go to lunch Ex: Bob is trying to find his book Ex: because the spider jumped

9 Independent Clause An independent clause can stand alone as a complete sentence Ex: Bob is trying to find his book. Ex: The door swung open.

10 Dependent Clause A dependent clause cannot stand alone as a complete sentence, even though it also has a subject and a verb It depends on the independent clause to become a complete sentence Ex: after we go to lunch Ex: because the spider jumped
