2. OBJECTIVE
To ensure that all students have an in-depth understanding of and follow all safety procedures including general lab and machine safety to make certain a safe working environment exists.

3. General Safety Rules ALWAYS wear eye protection. (safety glasses)
2. Keep all clothes tucked in and loose sleeves rolled up.
(Remove all loose clothing that cannot be secured.)
3. If you have long hair, tie it back.
(Long hair can get caught in the machine.)
4. Remove rings, bracelets, watches, and necklaces before doing any work in the lab.
Wear closed toed shoes.
(NO sandals or open toed shoes.)

7. Report ALL accidents or injuries to me immediately.
8. Keep the aisles clear of litter and scraps .
(Don’t leave anything on the floor that someone could slip on.)
9. Keep cabinet doors and drawers closed.
10. Only use spray paint in the paint booth.
(Make sure the ventilation fan is turned on.)

5. Machine Safety Notes PREPARATION
1. Wear safety glasses for all machine operations.
2. Secure or remove loose clothing.
3. Remove jewelry.
4. Tie back long hair.
5. No open toed shoes.
6. Position guards.
7. Check with teacher if you are unsure.

6. Machine Safety Notes TASK PERFORMANCE
1. Mentally review what you are going to do.
2. Focus FULL attention on the machine operation.
3. If a problem is encountered, stop the machine at a safe point.
4. Make adjustments only when the machine motion has stopped.
5. NEVER leave a machine until all motion has stopped.

Make sure the machine is turned off and all motion has stopped.
2. Remove scrap material that has accumulated during the operation .
3. Return any extra tools you have brought with you.

Keep your fingers AT LEAST 3” from the side of the blade. NEVER put your fingers in front of the blade.
Cut slight curves on the band saw. (Not tight curves.)
The blade guard should be 1/4” above the highest part of the wood. (Use the”Pinky Test” to make sure it is safe to turn the machine on and start cutting.)
Allow the saw to reach full speed before starting to cut.
Hold the wood flat against the table.
Make all of your short cuts first.

Feed work into the saw blade slowly and smoothly. Do not force the wood into the blade.
Keep from twisting the blade.
If you need to back the blade out of a long cut, first turn the power off and allow the machine to come to a complete stop, then slowly back the blade out of the cut.
Blades do occasionally break. If the blade breaks, turn it off and send your partner to get me. NEVER leave the machine, or try to open the casing and fix it yourself.
Clear away scraps close to the blade with a stick, NOT with your fingers.

11. Never leave the machine until it has come to a complete stop. When the machine stops, clean the table off by using a table broom, never your hands.

Keep your fingers AT LEAST 3” away from rotating tool.
Place the drill bit in the chuck, making sure it is straight, and tighten it securely.
Select the right size and type of bit. Wood bits for wood and metal bits for metal.
Always remove the key (the thing used to tighten the bit) before starting the machine.
Use an awl to mark the exact location of your holes.
Use a clamp to secure/fasten your project to the table.

7. Anything you are not using should be removed from the table. Other objects can get caught in the machine and can cause injuries.
8. DO NOT PANIC if the bit gets stuck in the wood. Turn the machine off. When it has completely stopped, remove the bit from your wood.
9. Always remove the chips from the table after the machine is turned off and is no longer moving. Use a table brush, NEVER your hands.
10. As with any machine, if it is not working properly you should always turn it off and send your partner to get me. NEVER leave the machine, or try to fix it yourself.

17. USING POWER SANDERS
Check the abrasive disc or belt for tears, burns, or loose areas. If either one is damaged, please report it to me immediately.
DO NOT use power sanders to shape parts when the operations could be performed better using other machines.
Sand only on the downward moving side of the disc or belt.
The table should be a maximum of 1/16” away from the disc or belt.
5. Remember to always hold what you are sanding flat against the work table. If you need to sand at an angle, adjust the table to the angle you need.

18. USING POWER SANDERS
Keep the wood MOVING with STEADY, EVEN pressure. DO NOT jamb the wood into the belt or disc.
Sand only dry, clean wood. DO NOT sand wood that has been glued or painted, or has nails(staples) or other metal on it.
The disc or belt sander is just as dangerous as any saw. Keep all parts of your body (especially your fingers) away from the disc or belt as it rotates.
Always make sure the dust collector is turned ON and that the vent is OPEN.
As with any machine, if it is not working properly you should always turn it off and send your partner to get me. NEVER leave the machine, or try to fix it yourself.
