1 Unit 1 What's the 'MATTER' ?

2 Section 1: Intro to Physical Science
GPS…Habits of Mind S8CS1: Students will explore the importance of curiosity, honesty, openness, and skepticism in science and will exhibit these traits in their own efforts to understand how the world works. S8CS3. Students will have the computation and estimation skills necessary for analyzing data and following scientific explanations.

3 GPS: Habits of Mind S8CS4: Students will use tools and instruments for observing, measuring, and manipulating equipment and materials in scientific activities utilizing safe laboratory procedures. S8CS6: Students will communicate scientific ideas and activities clearly. S8CS7: Students will question scientific claims and arguments effectively.

4 GPS…The Nature of Science
S8CS8: Students will be familiar with the characteristics of scientific knowledge and how it is achieved. S8CS9: Students will understand the features of the process of scientific inquiry.

5 Essential Questions How can you collect scientific data?
Why is it important to analyze scientific data? What are useful measurement methods to analyze scientific data? What is scientific inquiry? What is needed for a good experiment?

6 Key Terms Science- a way of learning about the natural world by gathering information (observing, inferring, and predicting). Observing- using one or more of your senses to gather information. Inferring- the process of making an inference, an interpretation based on an observation and prior knowledge. Predicting- Making a forecast of what will happen in the future based on past experience or evidence.

7 Key Terms Continued.. Qualitative Observations- an observation that deals with characteristics that are not expressed in numbers. Quantitative Observations- an observation that deals with a number or amount.

8 Inferring…

9 Inferring and Predicting

13 Make Observations **Observation : Looking around the room, make 3 qualitative and 3 quantitative observations. Think of a scenario that you can share where someone can infer what is happening and one where they can predict what will happen.

14 Observations…. 1. The car is red. 2. I took 24 pictures today.
3. The rope is 12 inches long. 4. Sand paper is rough. 5. That food smells funny. 6. The tea is very sweet. 7. She talks very loud. 8. We need 2 eggs for the recipe. 9. His jersey number is 6.

15 Collecting Data Accuracy- refers to how close a measurement is to the true or accepted value. Precision- refers to how close a group of measurements are to each other.

16 Accuracy vs. Precision

17 Math in Science Data- facts, figures, and other evidence gathered through observations. Mean- the numerical average of the numbers in a list. Median- the middle number in a list of numbers. Mode- the number that appears most often in a list of numbers.

18

19 Scientific Inquiry Scientific inquiry: refers to the different ways scientists study the natural world; it is the ongoing process of discovery in science. Steps? Hypothesis- a possible answer to a set of observations or answer to a scientific question.

20 Key Terms Variable- a factor that can change in an experiment.
Responding variable- the factor that changes as a result of changes to the manipulated variable in an experiment. (dependent) Manipulated variable- the one factor that a scientist changes during an experiment. (independent) Controlled experiment-an experiment in which only one variable is manipulated at a time.

21 Hypothetical Experiment using Scientific Method: Fertilizer Effect on Plant Growth
Use the OQHPEAD song to put these statements in order to correspond to the scientific method. *Based on A is H correct. If not modify and revise H. *Fertilizer may make a difference in plant growth. *Some people have flowers that grow bigger than others. *Miracle grow makes plants grow bigger. *Why do some people have flowers that grow bigger than others? *See and tell what happened. Repeat the process. *Conduct an experiment. *Variable: plant growth (RV), fertilizer (MV), water, sunlight, potting soil, pots, plant type.

22 Safety Procedures Symbols Prepare ahead of time Follow instructions
Know procedures in case of an emergency

23 Ticket to Leave… ** Experiment: With your group, design an experiment. You will need to: 1)State the purpose 2) List the variables 3) Label the manipulated variable 4) Label the responding variable 5) Give an hypothetical outcome
