1 New Moon By Stephanie Meyer Presentation by ___________
February 25, 2009 New Moon By Stephanie Meyer

2 Bella Swan Bella is an eighteen year old girl in love with vampire, Edward Cullen. She wants to become part of Edward’s family by becoming “one of them”. When Edward leaves her, she is devastated and depressed. She befriends werewolf, Jacob Black while trying to find danger. She finds out that “adrenaline plus danger plus stupidity” (pg. 188) is the recipe for the hallucinations she’s been having of Edward’s voice. So whenever there’s a chance for that, she goes for it, sometimes almost killing herself in the process.

3 Jacob Black Jacob is a sixteen year old werewolf. He lives on the Quileute Indian Reservation with his father, Billy. When Bella needs help with fixing some motorcycles, he befriends her. He helps Bella come out of her depression. After spending so much time with her, Jacob develops romantic feelings for Bella. Though Bella doesn’t return these feelings, she does refer to him as a very close friend. Jacob is Bella’s life saver, always getting her out of dangerous situations. He is friends with Quil and Embry, who are also Native Americans that live on the reservation. Embry stops hanging out with him and starts spending all of his time with Sam Uley. He gets angry until he finds out that Embry had become a werewolf.

4 Edward Cullen Edward is a 17 year old vampire who is in love with Bella. He is actually 104 years old from the day he was born, but vampires don’t age. Edward’s fears for Bella’s safety intensify when she cuts her finger and is almost attacked by his brother Jasper. In an attempt to protect her, he convinces her that he no longer loves her, and moves away with his family, leaving Bella heartbroken.

5 Theme Friendship helps people get through hard times.
Jacob and Bella trust each other and are best friends. I feel connected to this book because Bella and Jacob have very strong friendship and I feel that with some of my friends. We take care of each other and “watch each other’s backs.”

6 ? Golden Line/Friendship Burning Questions
“I remember wishing that Jacob were my brother. I realized know that all I really wanted was a claim on him. It didn’t feel brotherly when he held me like this. It just felt nice-warm and comforting and familiar. Safe. Jacob was a safe harbor.” pg. 375 Burning Questions ? Will Bella love Jacob instead of Edward? Is Victoria going to kill Bella? Will Edward ever come back?

7 Conflict Man vs. Self/ Man vs. Man
When Edward calls Bella’s house, Jacob answers the phone. Edward asks where Charlie is. Jacob responds that he is at the funeral. Edward thinks it’s Bella’s funeral, when it’s really Harry Clearwater’s, Edward goes to the Volturi in Italy to ask them to kill him. SPOILER ALERT! Solution: Bella and Alice go to Italy and Edward sees Bella. He decides not to kill himself.

8 Author's Craft Choose two Stephanie Meyer Tone Mood Imagery
Meyer uses a tone that is bitter towards Edward’s leaving, but when she meets Jacob it changes to an optimistic. Before she meets Jacob: “Maybe someday, years from now-if the pain would just decease to the point where I could bear it..” pg After: “Already I was falling into the pattern of things in La Push. I’d spent Sunday mostly on the beach, while Charlie hung out with Billy at the Blacks’ house.” on pg. 342. Stephanie Meyer doesn’t use that much imagery. The main senses she uses are sight and touch. On pg. 331 it says, “A young woman with satiny copper hair skin, and long, straight crow-black hair was standing at the counter by the sink, popping big muffins out of I tin and placing them on a paper plate.” The mood Stephanie uses is very serious. Bella is always sad and sincere about everything she saysor does. On pg. 338 it says, “I knew that as soon as Charlie and I were headed home, Jacob would take off-off to run around as a wolf, as he had done intermittently though the entire day.

9 Author's Craft Figurative Language Foreshadowing (continued)
Stephanie Meyer puts a preface at the beginning that tells a scene that happens later at the climax of the book, but doesn’t reveal what is happening. At the end of chapters, she uses foreshadowing for what’s about to happen in the next chapter. On pg. 277 it says, “That’s when I heard the noise that must have weakened me in the first place. Some thing sharp scraped along the window with a high-pitched squeal, like fingernails against the glass.” Meyer uses only a little bit of figurative language. For example, on pg. 233 it says, “The rhythm of my footsteps started to numb my mind.”

10 Author's Craft Symbolism Point of view (continued)
There isn’t very much symbolism except the title. On pg. 514 it says, “Before you, Bella, my life was like a moonless night. Very dark, but there were stars-points of light and reason. … And then you shot across my sky like a meteor. Suddenly everything was on fire; there was brilliancy, there was beauty. When you were gone, when the meteor had fallen over the horizon, everything went black. Nothing had changed, but my eyes were blinded by the light. I couldn’t see the stars anymore. And there was no more reason for anything.” New Moon is told in first person. Bella reveals only her thoughts. Sometimes she has hallucinations of Edwards voice in her head, so she can hear what he’s “thinking.”

11 My Rating I liked this book but the beginning was a little bit slow and it was hard to get in to. Otherwise, it was fantastic!
