Zachary Boyatt Chemistry lab tools and safety
2
Graduated Cylinder Used to measure fluid volume.
3
Beaker A beaker is a simple container for stirring, mixing and heating liquids commonly used in many laboratories.
4
Beaker Tongs Used to handle hot beakers, or to transfer or move without touching the beaker.
5
Erlenmeyer Flask An Erlenmeyer flask is used to measure, mix, and store liquids.
6
Watch Glass They can serve as lids for flasks and beakers. Watch glasses are nice for holding small samples for observation.
7
Well Plates Used to test or mix small chemicals and substances also easy to observe many samples in one place.
8
Triple Beam Balance The Triple Beam Balance is used to measure the mass of objects.
9
Crucible A crucible is a cup-shaped piece of laboratory glassware that is used to hold samples which are to be heated to high temperatures.
10
Evaporating Dish The evaporating dish is a laboratory device used in evaporation of solids and supernatant fluids. This device also evaporates excess water or other solvents to ensure that a dissolved substance or concentrated solution is left behind.
11
Crucible Tongs Crucible tongs are a tool that may be used for lifting heavy and hot crucibles out of furnaces.
12
Clay Triangle A clay triangle is laboratory equipment used for supporting crucibles when they are heated.
13
Thermometer (Alcohol)
The Alcohol thermometer or spirit thermometer is an alternative to the mercury-in-glass thermometer, and functions in a similar way. But unlike mercury-in-glass thermometer, the contents of an alcohol thermometer are less toxic and will evaporate away fairly quickly.
14
Stirring Rod A stirring rod or stir rod is a piece of laboratory equipment used to mix chemicals and liquids for laboratory purposes.
15
Pipette A narrow, usually calibrated glass tube into which small amounts of liquid are suctioned for transfer or measurement.
16
Volumetric Flask A volumetric flask is a piece of laboratory glassware that is used to prepare a chemical solution. It is used to make up a solution to a known volume.
17
Mortar and Pestle A mortar and pestle is a tool used to grind and mix substances, including chemicals in a laboratory and also food in the kitchen. The pestle is a heavy small bat, made from porcelain, wood or other materials, whose rounded end is used for pounding and grinding. The mortar is a bowl, which can be made from porcelain, wood, carved stone or other materials.
18
Test Tube Test tubes are used to hold small amounts of substance and materials for experiments or laboratory testing. The term test tube is also used to denote the processes performed or things produced in a laboratory.
19
Test Tube Tongs Most Chemistry labs have tongs that allow you to grip or hold small test tubes so you will not burn your hand or spill harmful chemicals on your fingers.
20
Test Tube Rack The function of a test tube holder is to hold the test tubes and keep them in a secure position without being held by hand.
21
Cleaning Brushes Used to clean test tubes, beakers, i.e.
22
Bunsen Burner A small gas burner that produces a hot, blue flame, used in chemistry laboratories, etc Used to heat up a chemical or burn something.
23
Hot Plate A hot plate is a portable self-contained tabletop small appliance that features one, two or more gas burners or electric heating elements.
24
Burette A buret or burette is graduated tube of glassware that has a stopcock at its bottom end. It is used to dispense precise volumes of liquid reagents.
25
Funnel Used to control liquids when pouring or pouring into a confined space.
26
Spatula In chemistry, a spatula is used to pick up small amounts of solid chemicals. They can be used to remove chemicals from bottles and applying cultures. They are used like a spoon.
27
Weighing Tray Used for weighing liquid or solid samples.
28
Forceps Forceps or forcipes are a handheld, hinged instrument used for grasping and holding objects.
29
Utility Clamp A utility clamp is an instrument that is used to hold or support items such as glassware or chemistry equipment.
30
Ring Stand A metal stand consisting of a long upright rod attached to a heavy rectangular base that is used with rings and clamps for supporting laboratory apparatus.
31
Iron Ring In a chemistry laboratory, an iron ring is used to support flasks or funnels upright in a stand. This is to enable the stability of the flask or funnel while testing is being performed.
32
Wire Mesh Just a piece of metal screening (often with a nonflammable material in the center).
