Planning for Tier 2

3 Scenario #1 Your good friend calls in tears. Her daughter Katie is struggling with reading and the school wants to refer her to special education for testing. Katie is in fourth grade. Mom says Katie’s third grade teacher said she was doing fine. She is angry at the school and wants your advice. If you could investigate the situation, what would you want to know? r t i

4 Scenario #2 You are a principal. Your school has made impressive gains in student outcomes over the last three years despite the fact that this school has a very challenging student population. You move to another district that has very poor student outcomes. What questions would you have for your new staff? r t i

5 Scenario #3 You suspect one of your students may have a learning disability and you are about to refer this student for testing. You are certain that you and your colleagues have done everything to ensure you have a strong case for this referral. What have you done? r t i

6 Components of an RTI Framework
Let’s categorize the questions and responses you have from the last three scenarios. r t i

7 r t i What is RTI? Response to intervention (RTI) integrates assessment and intervention within a multi‑level prevention system to maximize student achievement and reduce behavioral problems.

8 Genesis of RTI – Public Health Model
RTI has its roots in a public health model in which prevention is the primary goal. Through the delivery of effective core services, the majority of students should have their educational needs met. This means that most of our resources and effort go towards the design of effective core instruction, because it will provide us with the most payoff. Even with effective core in place however, there will be those students who require more intense interventions in order to be successful – and these interventions should be standardized to address common areas of need in academics and behavior. Now, even with those effective tiers in place, there will be a small number of students who require highly specialized, intensive treatments. RTI was developed to maximize the efficiency of our educational system.
