May be caused by autoimmune disorder – where the body attacks its own tissues

Usually occurs in elderly as a result of normal wear and tear
Obesity and repeated trauma can contribute to it
Occurs mainly in weight bearing joints like hips and knees
Includes the formation of bone spurs

Bacteria can enter the body through invasive medical procedures, illegal drug injections
Can result in bone destruction in the joint
Treated with antibiotics

Uric acid that normally is excreted in urine is forms crystals that build around joints
Most commonly in the joint of the big toe and is more common in elderly men
Drinking alcohol can make it worse
