2. History
The metric system was created in order to make a standardized unit of measurement. Long ago, people used all types of body parts, like arms and palms, to measure. Imagine how hard would it be to follow a bread recipe that called for two handfuls of flour and a nose width of butter? No two loaves would taste the same!

3. History
By the late 18th century, there were so many individual systems of measurement that it became very difficult to convert across different regions and countries. During the French Revolution ( ), the French government asked a team of scientists to develop a standardized system that everyone could use to measure.

4. History
The Metric System is now more commonly known as the International System of Units or the SI System. The U.S. uses a different system called the customary system.

6. Each Multiple has its own name
Milli = or 1/1000
Centi = 0.01 or 1/100
Deci = 0.1 or 1/10
= 1 (no prefix)
Deca = 10

Hecto = 100
Kilo = 1000

8. Length – “the Meter” How long is something?
We use the Meter to measure the length of objects
A meter is almost equal to a yard in the English System
* 1 yard= meter, 1 m = 3.28 feet, 1 yard = 3 feet

9. The Meter Comes in Different Sizes

1 inch = 25.4 mm
1 inch = 2.54 cm
1 m = 3.28 ft
1 mile = 1.6 km

15. The “Need to Know” on the previous slide holds true for EVERY unit of measurement in the metric system! You can substitute in gram for meter, or liter for gram… all three have the same exact conversions!
Keep this in mind as you continue through the presentation!

16. Mass – “the Gram”
Mass is a measure like weight, or how heavy something is.
Measurement like ounces and pounds.
The gram is closest to an ounce in the English System of measurement
(1 ounce weighs about the same as a slice of bread,
1 gram = about one paperclip!)

17. The gram comes in different sizes too!

18. Volume – “the Liter” Volume tells how much space an object takes up
Used to measure liquids
Measurement like cups, ounces and gallons
The liter is closest to a quart in the English System of measurement
(1 liter = quarts, 1 quart = 4 cups)
