To do well in the history of crime and punishment course you will need to build on the great work you did at Key Stage 3. One thing that we need to build on is the great work you did on chronology. Chronology is the names and the sequence of historical time periods. Let’s have a quick chronological quiz…

Task One: Talk to your partner. What do you think each picture is showing? Task Two: Look at the various pictures. What groups can you sort the pictures into? Groups / Headings.

Use the cards to decide which statements from the following are true. Copy only the TRUE statements. From 1000AD until the 1800s,punishments were often violent and harsh, to deter. There has been a professional police force over the last 1000 years. Prisons have been a key punishment for the last 1000 years. Prisons have only been used as a main form of punishment in the last 200 years. Between communities policed themselves. Changes in society such as the growth of towns has had an effect on crime. Stocks and pillories have been used as a punishment throughout time. Religion affected punishments more and more since 1800. Transportation has been an effective punishment in Britain in the last 50 years. A paid and professional police force is only a relatively modern idea.
