Dimensional Analysis Casey Lineberry
2
What is it? Dimensional analysis is a way to check relationships between physical quantities The relationships are set up in terms of conversion factors Used in chemistry, and other sciences, to get proper units for values or to cancel out terms
3
What is the point? As mentioned previously, the overall point is to cancel out units so the final units make sense. This makes the use of constants extremely useful. The basis for almost all of the math in chemistry
4
Applications Say you buy boards for a project, measured in inches. You then needed to buy trim for those boards that is the same size, but it is only sold in feet. You can use dimensional analysis with the conversion factor between feet and inches. This type of conversion can be done with almost everything—from how many inches are in a foot, to how tall the Empire State building is in units of Mr. Lineberry
5
How does it work? This length conversion table is to be used for convenience to help understand how this unit cancellation works. How many inches is centimeters? 11.35 centimeters*(1 inch/2.54 centimeters) = 4.33 inches
6
More examples Convert 100 meters to feet
100 meters*(1 foot/ meters) = feet Lets have some fun with this!! If your dog is 2.5 centimeters tall and the school is 200 yards long—how long is the school in terms of your dog? 200 yards*(91.44 cm/1 yard)*(1 dog/2.5 cm) = dogs!!!

Tomorrows Lab You and your lab partner will be given several items of varying lengths There will be handout that will have blanks for values with given units These items must be measured with a ruler and converted to the appropriate units This is to be recorded in your lab notebook according

Assignment… Worksheet 1 is going to be passed out
Look over it quickly and try to ask questions before you leave It is to be completed and brought to the next class If you struggle, you may come in before school tomorrow for extra help
