1 The Diocesan Mathematics Curriculum Problem Solving and Assessments What’s New??

2 Mathematics Curriculum
During the past years we have been transitioning a new Mathematics Curriculum Implementing Good Mathematical Practices are as important as curriculum. We must emphasize critical thinking skills.

3 Mathematics Curriculum
No New Topics The ONLY change in the Curriculum is the recommended Quarters has been changed to recommended Trimesters

4 Mathematics Curriculum
Sample Mathematics Curriculum Sample Diocese of Allentown Mathematics Curriculum Grade 4 DATE Trimester Recommended Operations and Algebraic Thinking Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems. 4.OA.1. Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison, e.g., interpret 35 = 5 × 7 as a statement that 35 is 5 times as many as 7 and 7 times as many as 5. Represent verbal statements of multiplicative comparisons as multiplication equations. 1 4.OA.2. Multiply or divide to solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem, distinguishing multiplicative comparison from additive comparison.1 5.NBT.5. Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm. 2 5.NBT.7. Add, subtract, decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. 3 Measurement & Data Solve problems involving measurement and conversion of measurements from a larger unit to a smaller unit. 4.MD.1. Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36), ... 2 before ITBS A solid figure which can be packed without gaps or overlaps using n unit cubes is said to have a volume of n cubic units. ongoing before ITBS

5 Last year we created a set of examples for Problem solving.
They are no longer available online at adeducators

6 They are in the School Packets you received today!!
Problem Solving They are in the School Packets you received today!!

7 New Trimester Curriculum Available on adeducators
Problem Solving New Trimester Curriculum Available on adeducators In today’s packet!

8 Assessments The Committee has created end of the Trimester Assessments for each grade Level.

9 Coming Soon Grade 5 and Grade 8 Trimester 3 Assessments
These are included in your School packets. Coming Soon Grade 5 and Grade 8 Trimester 3 Assessments Assessments are not available on adeducators.

10 Assessments Many, Many, Many, Many Hours went into these assessments.
Let us know what you think. What changes you would like to see.
