Ch. 6 Goals: Talk about and describe clothing (with colors, adjectives like cheap/expensive, etc.) Learn about shopping in the Spanish-speaking world Saber versus Conocer – meaning, conjugations, & uses Identify and use indirect object pronouns The verbs DAR & DECIR (present tense) – meaning, conjugations, and uses in context Learn how to conjugate regular –AR/-ER/-IR verbs in the past tense (preterite tense) Using demonstrative adjectives and pronouns (this, that, these, those)

6 Indirect Objects & I.O. Pronouns
I’m buying that skirt for María. direct object (What?) verb indirect object (To/For Who?) Indirect object pronouns tell “To whom?” or “For whom?” an action is being done.

7 Indirect Object Pronouns (in English)
(to or for) me (to or for) us (to or for) you (to or for) him, her, it (to or for) them

8 Indirect Object Pronouns (in Spanish)
me (to or for me) te (to or for you) le (to or for him, to or for her, to or for you-formal) nos (to or for us) les (to or for them, to or for y’all)

9 Using indirect object pronouns:
Native Spanish speakers often use BOTH the indirect object pronoun and the indirect object to which it refers in the same sentence to emphasize to whom the pronoun refers. Ex. Ella le vende la ropa a Elena. (to/for whom?) (I.O. pronoun) (indirect object) Indirect object pronouns are usually placed before the conjugated form of the verb. [*NOTE: In negative sentences the indirect object pronoun goes between the no and the conjugated verb.] Examples: Marta le compra una pulsera para Elena. Eva no le compra un regalo para Elena.

10 When a conjugated verb is followed by a verb in the infinitive form, the indirect object pronoun can be placed…… 1) before the conjugated verb or ) attached to the infinitive. Example: 1) Él no te quiere pagar. or ) Él no quiere pagarte. Because the indirect object pronouns Le and Les have multiple meanings, native Spanish speakers often clarify to whom the pronouns refer to by using the personal “a”. Examples: Yo le compro un regalo a Usted/ a Él / a Ella. Ella les vende unos sombreros a Ustedes/ a

11 The irregular verbs Dar (to give) & Decir (to say) are often used with indirect object pronouns Here are their conjugations in the present tense. Dar - conjugates like the verb “IR” Yo doy damos Tú das Él/Ella/Usted da Ustedes dan Decir (e:i) – *Except the yo form is like a “-go” verb Yo *digo decimos Tú dices Él/Ella/Usted dice / Ustedes dicen
