This assists companies in providing duty of care within the workplace and to inform employees

3. What is C.O.S.H.H? Control of Substances Hazardous to Health
COSHH is a legal objective and statutory requirement

4. What is the Aim of C.O.S.H.H?
COSHH is required to protect people against risks to their health
These could be immediate or delayed, from activities or use of product that are hazardous to health

5. What is the Aim of C.O.S.H.H?
There to enforce and raise safety standards in the workplace. By reducing accidents involving chemicals or Hazardous substances.

7. Who is responsible?
COSHH falls under the Healthy and Safety at Work Act – this is the law!
To avoid any claims of negligence you must make sure everybody understands their responsibility within the workplace.

This is to ensure the safety of colleagues, members of the public and importantly yourselves
This may sound rather alarming but it is very straight forward

9. What is a Hazardous Substance?
Hazardous substance can take the form of chemicals, products that contain chemicals fumes, dusts or vapours, biological agents (germs)
The packaging should identify if a substance is hazardous to you!!!

New COSHH symbols-In order from top left to bottom right the symbols are:
Dangerous to the environment;
Toxic;
Gas under pressure;
Corrosive;
Explosive;
Flammable;
Caution
Oxidising; and Longer-term health hazards such as carcinogenicity and respiratory sensitisation.

14. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)
You must make full use of any PPE provided and advised to be used when working.
If there is any doubt as to what you need or have been given then ASK
Protection to skin – gloves – eyes – is important

15. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)
Gloves and gauntlets will give excellent protection of hands and forearms, even if you do find them uncomfortable to wear
Goggles are essential when handling any chemical, which could spill, or splash
You only get one pair of eyes, so look after them!
In some situations it may be necessary to wear some protection on your feet. This maybe the case if you are washing down a waste disposal area, and run the risk of walking through a solution of water and chemicals

Eyes - rinse immediately with plenty of water, holding the eyelids open and seek medical advice immediately if corrosive, irritant or caustic products. For all other classifications seek medical advice if effects persist.
Inhalation - remove from source of vapour or spray mist and seek medical advice

Skin -wash thoroughly. For corrosive, irritant or caustic products seek medical advice
Ingestion - remove product from mouth. Never induce vomiting, if conscious give plenty of water or milk to drink and seek medical advice

18. Golden rules of Chemical Safety (Always and Avoid)
Always treat chemicals with respect – familiarity can breed complacency
Avoid personal contact with Chemicals – protect your eyes and skin
Avoid Swallowing / Inhaling
Always wear protective equipment - Eye Protection – Gloves – Protective Work wear (PPE)
Always obey supply instructions with the chemicals – refer to Labels & Safety Literature

Always replace closures on containers
Always store chemicals correctly
Always know your emergency First Aid procedures
Pay attention to hazards on chemicals
Never indulge in horseplay around chemicals
Never smoke, drink or eat near chemicals
Never mix Chemicals that should not be mixed - (example of chlorine gas produced)

20. Chemical Do’s and Don’ts
Wherever possible, ensure chemicals are kept in a secure and locked room
Use the correct chemical for the task being carried out
Wear rubber gloves and protective glasses at all times
Inform your supervisor / manager of any accidents or spillages involving chemicals
Thoroughly wash hands after using chemicals
Follow the directions for use on the label / product guidance sheet
Ensure work areas are well ventilated when using chemical

21. Chemical Do’s and Don’ts
Thoroughly wash out any buckets after use
Rinse and clean any equipment after use. Store equipment securely and safely
Follow emergency and first aid procedures in the event of an accident
DO NOT Mix chemicals under any circumstances
DO NOT Leave chemicals in unmarked containers
Do put chemicals into other incorrect containers
Never leave chemicals unattended

22. Chemical Do’s and Don’ts
DO NOT deviate from manufacturer’s instructions
DON’T use chemicals you are not trained to use
DO NOT Use any chemicals other than those approved
Always store chemicals other than those approved
Never issue chemicals to unauthorized persons

23. USE YOUR COMMON SENSE A lot of this sounds simple and is common sense – if we stick to this then there will be no problems
