Welcome To The Services Of The Dunlap church of Christ We Are So Glad You Are Here!

2 To The Services Of The Dunlap church of Christ
Welcome To The Services Of The Dunlap church of Christ Questions? Just Let Us Know!

3 Mark 7:1-13 “Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem. (2) And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault.”

4 (3) For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders. (4) And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables.”

5 (5) Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands? (6) He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.”

6 (7) Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. (8) For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.”

7 (9) And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. (10) For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death:”

8 (11) But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. (12) And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; (13) Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.”

9 Traditions Good? Bad? It Depends

10 On the source of the tradition. In what areas it is practiced.
It Depends On the source of the tradition. & In what areas it is practiced.

11 “paradosis” A practice that has been handed down. We have to ask,
(1) “Who handed it down” (2) “In what area is it practiced?”

12 4 Areas of Traditions Human traditions of little consequences in non-religious areas. Human traditions in religious areas that do not violate God’s tradition & may have developed in keeping with God’s tradition. Human traditions that violate God’s tradition. God’s revealed tradition that God has handed down through inspired men.

13 Areas Of Little Consequence
Family traditions Community traditions School traditions Nation traditions Society traditions Food, clothing, reunions, holidays, etiquette, etc. Acts 5:29

14 Religious Areas That Do Not Violate God’s Laws
Practices developed over a long period of time. Standing for prayer, Lord’s supper before or after sermon, service times, singing invitation songs, welcome circle after baptism, etc.

15 Religious Areas That Do Violate God’s Laws
A person who requested baptism on Saturday night had to wait so they could walk down the aisle on Sunday. He wanted a baptism, not a wedding ceremony! Demand everyone stand while singing “Stand Up For Jesus” but…

16 Religious Areas That Do Violate God’s Laws
Demand that everybody hold hands in a group prayer as they stand in a circle. Honestly, how does this practice differ from the Pharisees & scribes demand that you cannot eat until you ceremonially wash your hands?

17 Religious Areas That Do Violate God’s Laws
Sprinkling for baptism Christening babies Special religious services to honor human achievements Women preachers for mixed audiences Matthew 15:1-8; Titus 1:14; – traditions of men or commandments of men

18 God-Revealed Traditions
I Corinthians 11:2 “Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.” II Thessalonians 2:15 “Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.”

19 II Thessalonians 3:6 “Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.” Those things revealed in the Bible and handed down through inspired men for us to follow are God’s required traditions. We cannot set these aside in order to follow human traditions!

20 Traditions Good? Bad? It Depends

21 On the source of the tradition. In what areas it is practiced.
It Depends On the source of the tradition. & In what areas it is practiced.

22 Questions We Must Ask Who started the tradition? Why observe it?
Does it violate God’s teaching? If it fits in the first 2 categories we began with, it can be changed or practiced. But if it causes a brother or sister to stumble, it should not be followed (Rom. 14:21; I Cor.8:13; 9:9-23; 10:31-33)

23 If a tradition adds to, takes the place of, or takes away a commandment of God, it is sinful and cannot be practiced with God’s approval (Mark 7:7-13; Colossians 2:8). If a tradition is commanded by God, it is not optional!

24 The Simple Plan HEAR – Rom.10:17; Jno.20:30,31

26 Are You Wayward? “Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.” (Acts 8:22) “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” (James 5:16)
