3 Historical Background
Established in 1837 is the oldest University in Greece, in the Balcans and in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Overall students 120,000. Faculty 6000, administrative staff 5000. The Medical School is one of the very first Schools established along with Theology, Sciences, Languages and Law. The School of Health Sciences established in 1982 comprise of the Medical School, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Nursing There is no Engineering School (but there is the National University of Technology)

11 Doctoral DEGREE (PhD) PROGRAMME
 After completion of a Master’s Programme Doctoral Students pursue research work under supervision of one faculty member (supervisor) and 2 additional faculty members (as advisory committee). Duration from 3 to 6 years Obligatory is the research output with publications and participation in international conferences Participation as teaching assistants  Each faculty member (not lecturers) can lead up to 5 doctoral students

12 All programs have been accredited by the Ministry of Education and by International Peer Review Accreditation Teams Every 3-years Accreditation procedure is required based on self-assessment reporting that includes students’ evaluation and international experts site-visits evaluation interviewing faculty, students, alumni, and stakeholders.
