4 NJ DLM Introductory Assessment Coordinator Training 2017-2018
Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) DLM is the alternate assessment for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities. NJ uses the DLM Year-End (YE) model in English language arts, mathematics, and science. ELA and math = grades and 11 Science = grades 5, 8, and 11 NJ DLM Introductory Assessment Coordinator Training

5 NJ DLM Introductory Assessment Coordinator Training 2017-2018
Who Tests? Only students with the most significant cognitive disabilities may take the NJ DLM assessments. The NJ Fall Training materials provide a description of the tested population and participation criteria that determine who is eligible to take the NJ DLM test. Districts must follow the criteria, as it is based on federal requirements and guidelines. Paperwork will be completed by the IEP team to document the eligibility of students. 6 What Online Applications are Used?
Applications Used for Testing and Data Collection DOE NJSMART Districts submit information for their students including those sent out of district to DOE Student information is uploaded into your Educator Portal enrollment files by the Office of Assessments using NJSMART data submitted by districts DLM Educator Portal Educator Portal is for Educators Uses district and school staff login ID and password obtained by District Data Manager Stores enrollment data, subject rosters, accessibility selections, test monitoring reports, etc. Houses student test tickets, test information pages (TIPs), etc. DLM KITE Client Kite is for Kids Requires Student Login ID and Password assigned by DLM Online access to DLM testlets Online access to practice tests using only special “demo” login IDs NJ DLM Introductory Assessment Coordinator Training

7 Computer Adaptive Testing
How does it work? The assessment is a computer adaptive assessment. The process is: A student first takes a small set of items, called a testlet. The level of items in the first testlet are generated based on the responses to the First Contact (FC) survey. The system scores the items, then takes into account the level of difficulty of the test items and the students performance (correct or incorrect answers). Based on the student’s performance another testlet is selected, which contain items that are around the same level, somewhat easier, or somewhat harder than the last testlet. This is an iterative process until the testlets address all Essential Elements in the YE test blueprint. NJ DLM Introductory Assessment Coordinator Training

8 NJ DLM Introductory Assessment Coordinator Training 2017-2018
Who Tests? Decisions about Who Participates Are Not Based On Educational environment or instructional setting Low reading level/achievement level Anticipated student’s disruptive behavior or emotional duress Expected poor performance on the general education assessment Impact of student scores on accountability system Need for accommodations (e.g., assistive technology/AAC) to participate in assessment process Administrator decision NJ DLM Introductory Assessment Coordinator Training

21 You Must Train the Teachers
Conduct and document training sessions Assessment Coordinators must schedule teacher training for DLM between mid October and early December. Training materials include the NJ Teacher Training PPT. and one or more DLM module(s). DLM modules are obtained in Moodle. Teachers who are new to DLM will have more modules to complete than those who already administered the test (“Returning Administrators.”) Please note teachers must participate in training during school hours, and may not have students present when viewing the training materials. NJ DLM Introductory Assessment Coordinator Training

22 You Must Train the Teachers
Moodle is the DLM platform used to provide the mandatory teacher training modules required by NJ. This is in addition to the NJ produced teacher training presentation. You will conduct and oversee the training of teachers using both the Moodle site and the NJ teacher training materials. This screenshot is found on our NJ DLM Webpage on the lower right side. 29 School Program Preparation
DLM assesses the NJ Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) and is the alternate assessment companion to the NJ general assessments. School program staff must review the Essential Elements (EEs) provided on the DLM website and implement individualized instruction related to the EEs. The Essential Elements are skill statements written to reflect the standards at an appropriate level for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities Review of the DLM skill statements in light of the test blueprint will guide the selection of appropriate skills for each student within the specific conceptual areas assessed. NJ DLM Introductory Assessment Coordinator Training

30 School Program Preparation
Teachers must be given the name and contact info for the School Assessment Coordinator in charge of the NJ DLM. Teachers questions must be answered in district; Assessment Coordinators will contact DLM and/or the Office of Assessments as needed. Links to the DLM test blueprints for all subjects, and info on how to use the ELA and math learning maps for student’s instruction should be provided to teachers in district. Students taking the DLM should be delivered instruction and activities on a computer or other device recurrently. NJ DLM Introductory Assessment Coordinator Training

31 Use of the Test Specifications
Test Blueprints, EEs (skill statements), etc. Use of the Essential Elements (skill statements) and the Year End test blueprint will guide instruction by assisting in the selection of individualized targeted skills related to the NJSLS. The use of these documents will help prepare students for the DLM assessment. For ELA and math only, the learning maps, a network of sequenced targets that show a learning landscape in which multiple skills are related to many other skills, are also provided for your use.
