A student’s grade is the accumulated effort and quality of work that is put in over the course of a grading period. Student grades include classwork, homework, participation, assessments and tests, and performance tasks.

Classes READING The last designated reading class for most students. • Curriculum and instruction determined by Common Core Standards – Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening • Emphasize both informative text and literature • Focus on strategies that can be used to access content in other subjects • Use a variety of reading sources – novels, short stories, news articles, subject text books, etc. • Weekly vocabulary starts next week • Look for an emphasis on “Responding to Literature”

20 Classes Language Arts • Curriculum and instruction determined by Common Core Standards – Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening • Approximately 1/3 of the year spent on each of the following: Narrative Writing, Explanatory (Informative) Writing, Argumentative Writing • All three units begin with paragraph development and evolve into longer forms of writing • Within each writing type, focus on Statement of Purpose, Elaboration, Organization, Language & Vocabulary, and Conventions • Instruction is often integrated with other subjects, especially Science and Social Studies
