“His heart swelled with gratitude and pride. But at the same time he was filled with fear. He did not know what his selection meant. He did not know what he was to become. Or what would become of him” (64).
    I can really relate to what Jonas is feeling in this moment. He’s about to start his career, but he doesn’t really know what to expect. I can remember feeling the same way when I first started teaching.
    The author’s choice to end the chapter with these thoughts from Jonas is very telling—foreshadowing the true nature of Jonas’ assignment. Not knowing what he will become or what will become of him forces him to consider the possibility that this job could change him forever. There seems to be something sinister about being the Receiver.
