Hand of the Lord Masters Groups | Cornerstone Church Network
April 29, 2018 Hand of the Lord For today’s Hand of the Lord, let’s look at the story of Nehemiah. Read Nehemiah 1:1 through 2:9. (This is a long passage so you might want to split it up and have each group member read a portion.) Ask the group members to make observations about Nehemiah’s passion, process and wisdom as well as God’s part in setting the stage for the completion of this amazing, visionary project (completed in 52 days from start to finish!). Building Great Teams and Keeping them Healthy
April 29, 2018 Building Great Teams and Keeping them Healthy Let the group know that the following content comes from George Barna’s book by that title. We’re using it as a conversation starter on the topic so they should feel free to express different view points along the way. Our objective is to spend some time wrestling with the whole issue of vision and get as much clarity on the topic as possible. We do want them to come out of the day with a strong sense of the importance of leading with clear vision. Masters Groups | Cornerstone Church Network

The Five Dysfunctions Of a Team
April 29, 2018 The Five Dysfunctions Of a Team Patrick Lencioni The Five Dysfunctions of a Team By Patrick Lencioni The first dysfunction is an absence of trust among team members. Essentially, this stems from their unwillingness to be vulnerable within the group. Team members who are not genuinely open with one another about their mistakes and weaknesses make it impossible to build a foundation for trust. This failure to build trust is damaging because it sets the tone for the second dysfunction: fear of conflict. Teams that lack trust are incapable of engaging in unfiltered and passionate debate of ideas. Instead, they resort to veiled discussions and guarded comments. A lack of healthy conflict is a problem because it ensures the third dysfunction of a team: lack of commitment. Without having aired their opinions in the course of passionate and open debate, team members rarely, if ever, buy in and commit to decisions, though they may feign agreement during meetings. Because of this lack of real commitment and buy-in, team members develop an avoidance of accountability, the fourth dysfunction. Without committing to a clear plan of action, even the most focused and driven people often hesitate to call their peers on actions and behaviors that seem counterproductive to the good of the team. Failure to hold one another accountable creates an environment where the fifth dysfunction can thrive. Inattention to results occurs when team members put their individual needs (such as ego, career development, or recognition) or even the needs of their divisions above the collective goals of the team. Another way to understand this model is to take the opposite approach—a positive one—and imagine how members of truly cohesive teams behave: They trust one another. They engage in unfiltered conflict around ideas. They commit to decisions and plans of action. They hold one another accountable for delivering against those plans. They focus on the achievement of collective results. Overcoming Dysfunction #1: Absence of Trust In the context of building a team, trust is defined as: The confidence among team members that their peer’s intentions are good, and that there is no reason to be protective or careful around the group. In essence, this requires team members to make themselves vulnerable to one another, and be confident that their respective vulnerabilities will not be used against them. The vulnerabilities this refers to include weaknesses, skill deficiencies, interpersonal shortcomings, mistakes, and requests for help. Processes that help develop this kind of trust and vulnerability: Personal Histories Exercise Team Effectiveness Exercise (Most important contribution/Most important to improve) Personality and Behavioral Preference Profiles (MBTI, Brain Styles, DISC) 360-Degree Feedback Experiential Team Exercises The Role of the Leader Lead the way in demonstrating vulnerability Create an environment that does not punish vulnerability Leader vulnerability must be genuine not manipulative Masters Groups | Cornerstone Church Network
