1 LS1-OC100E Hemi Directional Loudspeaker
The hemi directional speaker, our newest development with regard to acoustical excellence

2 USPs, Benefits and Features Design guidelines Installation
Overview Introduction The product Applications Technology USPs, Benefits and Features Design guidelines Installation Installed projects I will start with a description of issues we came across in certain applications that brought us to start up a development project for this speaker. Followed by explaining in general the technical background of product, the added value of the product and how to install it. Last but not least I’ll show a benchmark with 4 of our competitors.

3 Hemi-directional comes from hemisphere
Starting with the name of the speaker. Bosch policy is to use describing names. In this case the product is a speaker where the sound is radiated in half a ball, or hemispheric pattern. So that’s why Hemi directional. Hemi-directional comes from hemisphere

4 Radiation pattern plot from EASE
Hemi-directional??? Radiation pattern plot from EASE The radiation pattern looks like a hemisphere Sound is radiated equally in all directions in front of the loudspeaker So not to the ceiling!! Here a impression of how the sound is radiated by the speaker. Quite logical the sound come from the front of the speaker and as you can see the sound distributes in the form of half a ball.

5 LS1-OC100E Hemi-directional loudspeaker
Pendant ceiling loudspeaker High power: 100W High SPL: SPLmax= 109 1m Large opening angle Large areas can be covered by this loudspeaker!! Too let you know what we are talking about, this speaker has a power rating of 100 Watts and produces 109 dB at 1 meter. On itself this is not the biggest surprise. But a wide opening angle in combination with a relatively constant SPL over a large area makes this product unique. I will explain and come back to this on several occasions in the presentation.

6 High ceiling areas where ceiling mounting is required, due to:
Applications High ceiling areas where ceiling mounting is required, due to: Many obstructions at the floor Limited amount of mounting positions, due to large open area. First the problems you come across in for example this DIY store. A rule of thumb with regard to intelligibility is that a speaker performs best when it is in the line of sight. In this case you see a lot of obstructions. So wall mounted speakers are not possible. Further on the ceiling you don’t have too much options to install.

7 Mega stores Applications Application note is available
These pictures elaborate this even clearer. No places to mount XLA speakers, lots of walls. Mega stores Application note is available

8 Exhibitions Applications Application note is available
In exhibitions the layout changes constantly. Application note is available

9 Swimming pools Applications
Another example where you don’t have the freedom of speaker installation. Swimming pools

10 The SPL is not sufficient for high mounting
Introduction A conventional ceiling loudspeaker is not suitable for these applications, since: The SPL is not sufficient for high mounting And/or the opening angle is limited, so many units would be required This causes high installation costs. The high ceiling makes it impossible to use ceiling speakers. For a ceiling from around 10 meters the driver of a ceiling speaker will not be powerful enough to bridge the distance (ceiling speakers can be used at maximum of 5 meters in general). And even if a speaker can reach the desired pressure levels, the opening angle is decreasing with higher frequencies which means a lot of speakers are to be used for good intelligibility / coverage; this costs lots of money and lots of installation time.

11 The hemi-directional loudspeaker in contradiction has:
Introduction The hemi-directional loudspeaker in contradiction has: High SPL (SPLmax = 109 1m) And a large opening angle for the whole frequency range! Hz 125 250 500 1k 2k 4k 8k Hor. >180 145 170 65 Ver. 155 135 70 The 100W hemi directional speaker has a large electrical power and a constant energy distribution over a large area. In contradiction to the ceiling speakers the opening angle is even equal or even increasing when the frequency gets higher. Result is that when moving away from the center of the speaker still all tones can be heard. (a ceiling speaker will have smaller and smaller opening angle as from 2KHz up. An average ceiling speaker opening angle at 2-4 KHz is degrees).

12 Technology Problem: A powerful loudspeaker driver with a large opening angle for all frequencies is contradictive by physical laws. 250 Hz 1 kHz 4 kHz Off course this needs some explanation. Because how did we do this ? Because an average speaker shows a decreasing opening angle with increasing frequency and high SPL speakers have the tendency to be more directive. (This is a physical law that derives from the wave length; when the diameter of the cone is smaller then the wavelength, the sound will be spread more and so is less directive. Diameter cone < wavelenght -> opening angle will increase. So high frequency, you need small speakers. But for high spl ). Opening angle always decreases with frequency

13 Solution for a large opening angle for all frequencies
Technology Solution for a large opening angle for all frequencies The frequency range is divided in 3 ranges: low, mid & high. A relative small loudspeaker driver is applied for each frequency range. The solution for large opening angle is found even in home audio speakers. The speaker uses of a 3way speaker system. Small diameter speakers for high tones and larger diameter speakers for low tones. However as you can see the cones are pretty small, which would mean the relative small driver cannot create so much sound energy and SPL is low.

14 It looks like a column, but with a large opening angle!
Technology Solution for a high SPL Combine multiple loudspeakers Prevent reduction of opening angle by advanced filtering. To still be able too reach a high SPL, the principle of speaker stacking is used. However when stacking, or making a column the speaker will act as a line source and distribute the sound more directive. We solved this by using a filter for each single speaker -> we call this advanced filtering. It looks like a column, but with a large opening angle!

15 Radiation pattern plot from EASE
Technology Compare the radiation 2 kHz with the LBC 3200 column loudspeaker. The result at 2KHz, where normally the speakers opening angle is falling apart. Radiation pattern plot from EASE

16 No frequency variation in the listening area!
Unique selling point Unique selling point: Full range sound in a large listening area, in contradiction to competitive products. Full range sound Full range Low & Mid Low Lets take a look at the competitor. Also the competition has more and even different speakers to arrange for large SPL. However not all frequencies are heard when walking away from the centre (the directivity/small opening angle of the speakers and speaker stacks will start to work). No frequency variation in the listening area!

17 Feature: Excellent sound quality Flat frequency response
Features Feature: Excellent sound quality Flat frequency response Low frequency reproduction, despite its relative small housing Besides the fact that all frequencies can be heard also the frequency response is innovative. You can see it is a flat response and especially the bass reproduction is amazing considering the size of the housing.

18 Provision for installation of supervision board
Features EVAC compliant Ceramic connector Thermal fuse Heat resistant wiring Provision for installation of supervision board Separate connector for supervision board The connector for the supervision board is placed under the surveillance board. So there is no need to fix all treads in the same connector.

19 Features Attractive design

20 Features The speaker cones have a protective coating especially for the use with chlorides in swimming pools. A protective treatment is applied, so the product can be applied in tough environments like swimming pools.

21 Variation in SPL of 9dB (with 1 loudspeaker)
Design guidelines This table is in the manual! EXAMPLE In the manuals we provide a simple design tool. However take note of the fact that this is a selection of just 1 speaker. When more speakers are placed in a room, the overlap of speakers and other factors will decrease the sound pressure variation. Area = 681 m2 Variation in SPL of 9dB (with 1 loudspeaker) Maximum SPL = 89,7 dB Height 10m

22 When mounting height increases Listening area increases
Design guidelines When mounting height increases Listening area increases the distance between loudspeakers can be increased. The SPL at the listening height decreases Speech intelligibility decreases. To abbreviate on the mounting height a little
