1 Circulatory system Learning objectives:
Understand the general structure of the circulation system Ask for own definition. NOTES. RECAP: Task 1: State the function of the circulatory system Task 2: List the components of the circulatory system

2 RECAP The main function of the circulatory system is transport. It is particularly important for the delivery of reactants of respiration, and disposing of the waste products of respiration The circulatory system consists of: Heart (pump) Blood vessels (arteries, veins and capillaries extend throughout the body) Blood (transport medium)

3 Humans don’t have a single circulatory system.
What do they have? Why?

4 Double circulatory system
A double circulatory system means that on any complete journey around the body, the blood will flow through the heart twice. This system ensures a high pressure to body, yet a low pressure to lungs. Pulmonary circulation: carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs to be oxygenated, and then back to the heart. Systemic circulation: carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the cells to be used, and deoxygenated blood back to the heart

5 Double circulatory system
The right-side receives deoxygenated blood that has travelled around the body and pumps it to the lungs to collect oxygen and dispose of carbon dioxide. The left side receives oxygenated blood from the lungs and sends it around the body to replenish cells with oxygen needed for respiration. The blood from the left and the right side never mix.

6 Coronary artery The heart’s function is to supply the body with oxygen and nutrients carried in the blood. The heart is a muscle and so also needs oxygen and nutrients to contract. The heart supplies these substances to itself through the coronary arteries.

7 Task 3: Help RBC by writing some directions...
The journey of blood Help!!! I’m lost! I stopped a platelet to ask where I am – he told me I’m in the vena cava and rushed off to get together with his mates at a clot! I need to get oxygenated before delivering oxygen to the kidney... but I don’t know the way! Love RBC Task 3: Help RBC by writing some directions... But remember RBC has no brain (nucleus) so keep it simple... Include specific blood vessels, specific heart chambers and specific valves

8 TASK: answers Vena Cava  right atrium  triscuspid (right atrioventricular) valve (here you will also be able to see the tendinous cords)  right ventricle  semilunar valve  pulmonary artery  lungs (OXYGENATE!)  pulmonary vein  left atrium  biscupid (left atrioventricular) valve (here you will also be able to see the tendinous cords)  left ventricle  semi-lunar valve  aorta  renal artery   capillaries of kidney (DIFFUSE!)

9 The circulatory system
Task 4: Create a diagram of the general structure if the circulation system to include the blood vessels (labeled with correct names): Into and out of heart To and from lungs (pulmonary) To and from liver (hepatic) To and from kidneys (renal) To and from legs (femural) To and from brain (carotid) Extension: include the blood vessel that goes from the small intestine to the liver (hepatic portal vein)

10 Thumbs up or down Learning objectives:
