Gifted & Talented Mrs. Emmich
In 3rd grade, we are doing a measurement unit. We built a giant Yeti by measuring our own body parts and doubling them. We also traced the body of a third grader on grid paper and found the area of her body tracing. Soon, we will start exploring the concepts of volume and liquid measurement. In the end of the unit, students will use their knowledge of nets, perimeter, area and volume to create a box that tells a unique story about them. In 5th grade, we are doing a unit on probability. We’ve learned the difference between experimental and theoretical probability and how to calculate each one. We’ve played a lot of games involving coins, dice, and spinners, and soon we will be creating our own games for a class carnival. Our goal is to create games that are slightly unfair. After all, carnival owners do have to make some money! In 4th grade, we have been learning about Algebra. We’ve learned how to use variables and equations to solve number puzzles. We’ve also learned how to use inverse operations, working backwards, and the cover-up method to solve equations. Soon, we will be creating stores in a mall. In order to figure out the prices of the goods in the store, students will have to be able to solve equations with variables.
