6. Tips before applying
Make a personal list of what you would like from a program
Do research on the programs before you apply
Visit or contact programs that interest you beforehand. This serves two purposes:
It gives you an idea of the climate of the program before you spend time and money going for an interview
You get to know residents and gives you an advantage if you do interview

7. Tips before applying
Budget for applications and interviews and chose wisely. It’s a big investment so do your homework in advance. If you don’t want to live somewhere or don’t feel like it’s a good fit, then don’t apply there.

8. Where to go?
Use the ADEA PASS search engine to find out about programs and RESEARCH.
Make a list of things that are important to you
Stipend
Location
What do you want to gain from the program

9. Letters of recommendation and other help
These are important especially with a Pass/Fail curriculum
Utilize the faculty – does a faculty member have a relationship with the school or program you’re interested in? Are they a graduate of the school?
Do they know the program director or dean?
Get a variety (clinical/preclinical/advisor) and chose wisely-people who can attest to the qualities the program values

10. How many schools should I apply to?
It varied among respondents and is probably dependent on the competitiveness of the program and what you can afford.
Some said to apply to as many as you can. Others felt like 10 was enough.

11. Contacts Alumni are happy to talk to you and help you out.
Many would be willing to let you stay with them to save costs.
Use resources-contact your personal dentist or specialists.
Ask lots of questions.
