2. What is TeachNY?
In spring 2014, SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher and her team finalized a proposal for a NYSED grant funded through Race to the Top to develop policy that would transform teacher and school‐leader preparation in New York.
Stage 1: TeachNY Advisory Council: began by engaging state and national education leaders as well as researchers in identifying challenges and best practices for educator preparation. The Advisory Council was convened by SUNY from and resulted in a May 2016 report.
Stage 2: TeachNY Steering Committee: convened in August 2016, November 2016, and January 2017 to discuss the Advisory Council report, form working groups on its key recommendations, and shape policy language to submit to the BOT by May Concurrently, regional gatherings were held to get direct input on educator preparation programs from stakeholders across the state, including faculty, higher ed and program administrators, and in-service teachers. The TeachNY Roundtable has also been meeting with statewide education and governmental leaders.
Stage 3: TeachNY Policy Implementation: once policy is approved, moving to implementation and ongoing assessment/review.

4. TeachNY Steering Committee charge:
Examine SUNY’s existing educator preparation policy (A New Vision for Teacher Education);
Consider the TeachNY Advisory Council’s Report of Findings and Recommendations (May 2016), as well as other resources;
Consider the local, regional, and state needs for educator preparation and development;
Develop recommendations regarding revisions to existing policy and proposed language for a renewed, enabling policy framework and action agenda; and
Offer recommendations regarding how to sustain and assess efforts post- promulgation of new policy.

6. TeachNY Statewide Roundtable:
Review the recommendations of the TeachNY Advisory Council and build consensus on the potential for action;
Identify promising recommendations that require partnership across agencies and determine strategies for implementation;
Solicit feedback from their organizations’ memberships to inform policy development and advancement;
Provide statewide perspective and data to support policy improvement; and
Collaboratively address pressing education workforce development issues

Co-chaired by Chancellor Zimpher and Commissioner Elia, TeachNY Statewide Roundtable membership includes SUNY BOT Chair H. Carl McCall, NYS Board of Regents member Kathleen Cashin, and additional representatives from New York State government, P-12, and higher education.
