EVALUATION CRITERIA PROPORTION IN THE FINAL MARK 1) 2 PHOTOS + OPINION ESSAY 20 % 2) QR CODE WORKSHEET+TRANSLATION 3) READING POETRY 20 %* 4) PRESENTATION 5) ATTENDANCE 20% TOTAL % = EXAM STUDENTS WHO READ POETRY AT THE CREATIVE TREASURY WILL BE EXSCUSED FOR (POTENTIAL) NON-ATTENDANCE OF 2 LECTURES AND WILL BE GIVEN A GUARANTEED ‘excellent’ FOR THAT ASSIGMENT ATTENDANCE GRADE > 70% excellent (5) > 65% very good (4) > 60% good (3) > 59% sufficient (2)

6 PART-TIME STUDENTS OPTION 2: ‘TRADITIONAL EXAM’ based on: OPTION 1:
A) welcome to participate in both photo exhibition and poetry evening (contact me!!) B) IF NOT: the same as regular students, but instead of participation in 1 and 2 – creation of 2 worksheets and presentation of one of the topics from the worksheets marks can range up to excellent (5) OPTION 2: ‘TRADITIONAL EXAM’ based on: the selection of materials (vocabulary) from the 1st semester (not covered in lectures) peer-generated worksheets in the course of semester will be specified by the end of April in this case maximum grade can be sufficient (2) grade good (3) – if traditional exam is accompanied by one of the tasks for regular students

CONCEPT → Heritage Fragments: Dichotomy of Perception REASON: incorporating culture in our everyday lives only if we understand the culture, we can value it rasing awareness of the importance of heritage for local development understanding importance of preservation confronting sustainability contributing to one’s own sense of identity developing connection with our cultural / historical heritage active ‘participation’ in local heritage & awareness of spiritual development of society problematizing the issue visualising & verbalizing the issue WHY DICHOTOMY? → critical perception which is dual → preserved vs. neglected examples Dictionary definition of ‘dichotomy’: Merriam-Webster:  a division into two especially mutually exclusive or contradictory groups or entities e.g.the dichotomy between theory and practice Cambridge dictionary:  difference between two completely opposite ideas or things e.g. dichotomy between what someone says and does

2 STEPS: 1) VISUALISING THE PROBLEM 2 smartphone close-ups – BLACK&WHITE fragments (possibly abstract) of local heritage: → 1 preserved / in good condition vs. 1 neglected/ruined Dictionary definition of ‘close-up’: Longman: a photograph or part of a film in which the camera seems to have been very close to the picture it took Cambridge dictionary: photograph taken from a short distance that gives a very detailed picture - title your 2 photos (English) print on paper cca 8*5cm and bring to lecture / my office or - to PHOTOS DUE: 15 March 2017

12 2) VERBALISING THE VISUAL: Opinion essay
TOPIC: Discuss the value of heritage (social, economic and ecological developmental potentials) and importance of active involvement in its preservation Consider: importance of local heritage – prospect for economic and social development developmental potentials contributing the the sustainable development maintaing the local identity improving the quality of the environment involvement of all stakeholders using and enhancing local resources LENGTH: words (1,5-2 pages)

13 What is Opinion Writing?
- states a claim and gives the writer’s views on a topic persuades readers to think or feel a certain way or calls them to take some action can be found in: essays, advertising, book reviews, letters to an editor, magazine articles, newspaper columns, blogs… characteristics of a good opinion piece: opinion / thesis statement clear and organized structure clear and concrete claims sound reasoning relevant evidence clear transitions GOAL OF AN OPINION ESSAY: to state the writer’s opinion and convince the reader about our point of view OPINION ESSAY

14 OPINION ESSAY STRUCTURE
OPENING PARAGRAPH explain your thesis / the statement clearly and give your opinon about it → THE MAIN IDEA OF YOUR ESSAY / THE POINT YOU ARE TAKING TO MAKE OR PROVE includes: thesis statement and 2 / 3 reasons why you believe this statement is true BODY (the longest part 2-3 paragraphs) convince the reader and give specific reasons and facts to support your opinion present your viewpoints and develop your arguments each paragraph should contain a single, clear idea explained in more detail back up your opinion with documentation → refer to your photo as adequate & supportive documentation CONCLUSION sum up your argument and restate your thesis statement & opinion remind the reader what your reasons were OPINION ESSAY CHECKLIST
