1 How to be a police officer
By Officer K Buckingham

2 Types of Officer Firstly, there’s traffic cops which direct traffic on busy roads. Sometimes, they use sign language to say stop and go. Occasionally, they give out fines for speeding and other road safety offences. Then there’s a scene of crimes officer, who are like detectives. They look for physical clues at the scene of crime. Detectives take responsibility for solving cases. Like the scene of crimes officer, they also look for clues. Beat officers are the police officers you see walking on the street. They are the most numerous. They also do most of the arresting, and front line work with the public. The police inspector is in charge of the whole team. A police commander is at the top of the tree. They command (hence the name) an entire area’s policing. For my power project.

3 What Training is involved?
To become a police officer, a LOT of training is involved. You train for 2 years before being recruited. From group discussions to Roleplays, it takes a lot to become a policeman/woman. The list below are the contents of the CKP* training programme. There’s also a fitness training programme for CKP. Using police powers fairly and justly Social and community issues and neighbourhood policing Responding to incidents and supporting victims and witnesses Searching premises and individuals in a policing context Taking part in planned policing operations Interviewing witnesses and suspects The criminal justice system Legislation, policy and guidelines. Here Is A Website If You Want To Find Out More! *CKP stands for Certificate in Knowledge of Policing.

4 What tools are used? In this slide, you’ll see most of the tools a beat officer (see slide 2) use. Many police officers are armed with handcuffs. They are handy when arresting criminals. A good whistle is necessary when mobile and Radio signals aren’t working. (e.g. Underground, remote places.) Police may occasionally be found carrying Tasers. These are used to inflict an electric shock to the criminal. However, officers don’t usually carry Tasers. Pepper spray! Didn’t expect THAT, did you? It is used when people are being violent. Spray it and it will cause pain when sprayed at the face, allowing time for arresting, and the victim to get away. Walkie talkies are used to communicate with other officers. They use smartphones too, though!
