My Papa was born in 1932 and grew up on a farm
My Papa was born in 1932 and grew up on a farm. I was born in 2006 and I am growing up in a big city. On Sunday I interviewed him by FaceTime and learnt all about his life as a boy. We had VERY different lives. Take a look at these questions and our different answers... 3

What type of home did you grow up in?
<< DEAN (7 1/2 years old) >> << DEAN (82 years old) >> I was born in a big city (Sydney). I am growing up in an apartment. I was born on a farm in South Australia. I lived in a concrete garage my father built. We did not have electricity and our water came from the rainwater tank. 4

Where did you play and have fun?
<< DEAN (7 1/2 years old) >> << DEAN (82 years old) >> I played in a park across the road from our apartment or in my bedroom with my toys and Max. I played with my sister, Judy and brother Whyard. You had to make up your own games like chasing chickens! 5

What were your jobs around the house?
<< DEAN (7 1/2 years old) >> << DEAN (82 years old) >> I feed Georgie our parrot breakfast. I take my plate into the kitchen. I put my clothes away and fold up my socks into balls. I fed the farm animals and chopped up the fire wood. I also collected the eggs! 7

What kind of school did you go to and how did you get to school?
<< DEAN (7 1/2 years old) >> << DEAN (82 years old) >> I go to a big school in Sydney with about 500 students. My school has a playground, a basketball court and computers. I travel to and from school by car. I walked five kilometres to school along a dirt road. My school was called, Mosquito Creek Primary School. It had 17 students and one teacher. 8

What were your favourite toys?
<< DEAN (7 1/2 years old) >> << DEAN (82 years old) >> I played with the iPad, computer and LEGO. Also the Doctor Who DVD board game, dinosaurs and super heroes. We made our toys from wood. I was given a bike when I was six to ride to school. 11

What did you do for entertainment and to relax?
<< DEAN (7 1/2 years old) >> << DEAN (82 years old) >> I listen to Doctor Who music on the iPhone and watch physics documentaries on TV. I also love going to the movies. I went to the cinema once to see the Wizard of Oz… We also caught rabbits for fun. 12

What kind of birthday parties did you have?
<< DEAN (7 1/2 years old) >> << DEAN (82 years old) >> I’ve had a spiderman party, a drum party and a Dr Crunch party where lizards and snakes were brought to my house. My Aunty Ethel was a very good cook so we went to her farm for birthdays. 13

What beach did you go to? << DEAN (7 1/2 years old) >> << DEAN (82 years old) >> I swim at Brighton Beach and near our Hawks Nest beach house at Christmas. I went swimming in the sea near Victor Harbour. 14

Who were your friends and what did you do together?
<< DEAN (7 1/2 years old) >> << DEAN (82 years old) >> My friends are Andrew, Mary, Alexander, Sebastian and Zavek. We go to museums, have breakfast and play with the iPad and my toys. I joined the Cub Scouts and one of my friends was Ward. We’d play on an old railway line that nobody used. 15

Did you go to church? << DEAN (7 1/2 years old) >> << DEAN (82 years old) >> I say prayers at school and go to Church for Easter. I believe in God. (But he has no role in physics). I went to Sunday School to learn about God. 16

What were your favourite foods?
<< DEAN (7 1/2 years old) >> << DEAN (82 years old) >> Eggs, bacon, toast, baked beans, dim sims, fried rice, milk shakes, corn chips and popcorn. Roast lamb, roast potatoes and plum pudding but no ice-cream! We didn’t have a fridge. 17

What are two of your favourite memories as a boy?
<< DEAN (7 1/2 years old) >> << DEAN (82 years old) >> 1. When my brother Max was born in 2009. 2. Seeing all the rides, toys and characters at Disneyland and Universal Studios when I was 4. 1. When my father chased me for locking my sister up in the dairy shed. 2. The time my sister and I had a swim in the animal water trough! 18
