Louis XVI, looking for more tax income, attempted to tax the nobility (2nd Estate) Called a meeting of the Estates-General 1st and 2nd Estates could veto (overrule) the 3rd Estate 3rd Estate insisted each delegate have one vote Louis XVI sided with nobles rd Estate becomes the NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

The NATIONAL ASSEMBLY began passing laws and reforms in the name of the French people Proclaimed the end of the monarchy The beginning of representative government in France

The National Assembly was locked out of their meeting place; broke into an indoor tennis court Said they wouldn’t leave until a new constitution was created This was known as the Tennis Court Oath

Louis brought in Swiss guards to restore order People prepared to defend the city Mobs stormed the Bastille, a prison and armory- took control of the building

Rumors circulated- people thought nobles were hiring outlaws to terrorize peasants Mobs of peasants broke into nobles’ homes, destroyed property Known as the GREAT FEAR

1789- Women’s march- A group of women from the 3rd Estate, upset by the higher price of bread, marched to Versailles, made Louis and Marie Antoinette return to Paris

1789- National Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen- cited guaranteed rights (freedom of speech, religion) Adopted “Liberte, Equalite, Fraternite” as the official phrase of the Revolution

1789- National Assembly took church lands, declared that church officials were to be elected and paid as state officials Ended the Church’s independence in France Angered some peasants

1791- National Assembly creates a new constitution with a limited constitutional monarchy

Later in 1791, due to popular pressure, the National Assembly was dissolved, the king was deposed; called for the creation of a new legislature (the NATIONAL CONVENTION) Abolished the monarchy Declared France a republic

Most people involved in radical government changes were Jacobins (a political party) 1793- Louis XVI executed REIGN OF TERROR- Maximillien Robespierre takes control, led the Committee of Public Safety- protected the Revolution from “enemies” Led to thousands being executed by the guillotine

1794- Some members of the National Convention turned on Robespierre- demanded his arrest Robespierre was guillotined in 1794

1795- New plan for government- placed power in the hands of the upper middle class Called for a 2-house legislature and an executive body of 5 men called the Directory Gave France a period of stability : Rise of Napoleon in France’s military
