Before we start teaching children how to add and subtract, children need to have a good understanding of number and quantities.
Number songs
Playing games
Practising counting steps, jumps and claps
Counting the number of children in a line
Counting out money when role playing shopping
Compare two groups of objects realising when they are the same.
Counting on and back using a numberline.
Children are encouraged to use maths in their play and problem solve purposefully.

3. Adding groups of objects together

4. One More and One Less
Children begin to find one more or one less than a number to 10 by adding or removing an object and counting the total.
Children are taught how to add and subtract one using a numberline.

5. End of Year Expectations in Reception
In order to achieve the Reception end of year expectations in Number, children are required to be able to find one more and one less than a given number up to 20. They are also expected to add and subtract quantities and objects by ‘counting on and back.’
Children look for the largest number
and count on.
