Food The Pottawatomi Native Americans were farming people. Pottawatomi women planted and harvested corn, beans, squash and tobacco, as well as gathering wild rice and berries. The men hunted dear, elk, wild birds and caught fish. The Pottawatomis also tapped trees for maple syrup like we do today in Michigan.

Pottawatomi men wore breechcloths, plain style leggings, deerskin shirts, porcupine roach headdress and in bad weather they wore robes. Here are some pictures. For the winter they wore woolly things that they called mitts that we call mittens.

Housing There were two types of homes used by the Pottawatomis: dome-shaped houses called wigwams and rectangular lodges with bark covering known as a birchbark house. Pottawatomi villages usually included a sweat lodge, meat drying huts and a ballfield. Today, Native Americans only build a wigwams or lodge for fun. Most Pottawatomis live in modern houses or apartments. Below are photos of the different types of houses. Dome-Shaped Rectangular Shape Wigwam Shape
