6 Renaissance It spanned the 15th to the 16th centuries and was defined as a new enthusiasm for classical literature, learning, and art which sprang up in Italy towards the close of the Middle Ages. The Renaissance was essentially an intellectual movement. It is this intellectual quality which gives it so large a place in universal history.

12 Renaissance Labor During the Renaissance Guilds—groups of individuals with common goals. Guild derives from the Anglo-Saxon root geld which meant to pay or contribute. The noun form of geld meant an association of persons contributing money for some common purpose.

13 Types of Labor Guilds During the Renaissance
Merchant—involved in long-distance commerce and local wholesale trade. They enforced contracts among members and between members and outsiders. Merchant guilds were wealthier and had a higher social status than craft guilds. Craft—organized along lines of particular trades Victuallers bought agriculture commodities and made consumables Manufacturers made durable goods and exported them to distant towns. Service guilds included clerks, teamsters and entertainers.

14 Renaissance Labor Practices during the Renaissance Guilds protected business people and set good business practices. Regulations stated that all members got a chance to sell goods that were limited in quantity. Set standards for high quality of work. Regulated prices that could be charged

15 Renaissance Rise of Capitalism The use of capital (invested money) to make more money. Capitalists took risks with the hope of gaining large profits How might capitalists minimize their risks?

16 Renaissance Rise of Capitalism Joint Stock Companies: To reduce risk capitalists would combine their funds. Investors would receive a stock in the company representing how much they invested as well as how much they received for a successful venture.

24 Renaissance Technology 1455-Gutenberg prints the Bible and it becomes more available to the common people. Impact- less reliant on the clergy, information more readily available and ideas travel faster
