1 Media The Role & Influence

2 Formats Television Most powerful and commonly accessed, transmits as digital and as analog. Digital has led to massive increase in televised sport, with dedicated sports channels (Sky Sports 1 in 1991) Rules set by the Government about the transmission of sport. Listed events cannot be shown exclusively on “pay per view” or satellite and cable networks. Events such as the FA Up Final, Wimbledon Tennis championships and the Olympic Games.

3 Radio Radio has grown with development of digital audio broadcasting (DAB). Now there are far more radio stations, again with some dedicated to sport (radio 5 live). Radio has some advantages over T.V. Broadcasting costs are much lower and less technology to transmit, fewer commentators. Radios are very cheap and portable so you can listen while walking around etc.

4 Newspapers, magazines, books.
Press Newspapers, magazines, books. Newspapers have dedicated sports sections every day and at the weekends. Magazines specialist magazine4-4-2 football also sports related stories in Sunday magazines. Books can be novels, textbooks or autobiographies.

5 Information Technology
Most recent and has wealth of information with CD-ROMs, Pod casts, U tube Coaching sites etc.

6 Positive Influences Shows high level performance with slow-motion which allows close analysis, greater depth of knowledge and understanding. (Exemplar = a particularly good example or model of how something should be performed.) Think of match of the day analysis and sky sports final word. Promotes sports and high level of popularity and participation along with health benefits. Increasing revenue – through payments for broadcasting rights, also makes it attractive for sponsors if there is a high level of media coverage. (30 seconds of advertising time during the 2010 telecast is expected to cost US $3.01 million)

7 Negative Influences Intrusion on an event – get in the way of spectators, lack of privacy for competitors. (E.g. John Terry, Chelsea) Media pressure – rules for sports are changed to make games more exciting. E.g. Tie break in Tennis. Edited Coverage – T.V directors decide what is shown so we are subject to bias and do not see all the action. Altered event timings – altered to suit television so they can reach the largest audiences. In football (explain) Undermining officials – decisions made shown in slow motion in the stadium and analysed. Limited attendance – if its on live, its cheaper to stay at home so might discourage people. Biased popularity – activities with large media audiences tend to flourish to the detriment of other events/sports.
