28. Literary Technique - Voice
Voice is the way a writer or speaker uses words, syntax, and/or tone to express ideas as well as persona or personality.
Today, we will review voice in terms of it being either formal or informal.

From “What Is Cultural Identity?” by Trumbull and Pacheco:
“In this way, we often talk about other people’s cultures, and not so much about our own. Our own culture is often hidden from us, and we frequently describe it as ‘the way things are.’ Nonetheless, one’s beliefs and actions are not any more natural or biologically predetermined than any other group’s set of beliefs and actions; they have emerged from the ways one own group has dealt with and interpreted the particular conditions it has faced. As conditions change, so do cultures; thus, cultures are considered to be dynamic.”

Compare the voice we identified in the previous essay to Patricia J. Williams’ “Ethnic Hash”:
“Throw in as many exotic-sounding spices and mysterious roots as you can lay your hands on— go on, use your imagination!—and garnish with those fashionable little wedges of lime that make everything look vaguely Thai. 31. So what is tone?
Tone and voice are similar. Often tone refers to the attitude within a work.
Tone can be formal or informal.
Tone can be sarcastic, cheerful, aggressive, etc.
Your voice is consistent, but tone is dynamic.

Each table has a sentence from the homework and a piece of chart paper. Write the sentence on the chart paper INCORRECTLY. Then, under the incorrect sentence, use a different color to write the sentence CORRECTLY.
