Environmental Performance Prepared for CFOA, London, 28th January By Matt Farnsworth: Environment & Sustainability Manager, Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service
2
Introduction Project Background 2007-2009
Strategic Resource Assessment Sustainability Reporting Environmental Sustainability – Key Performance Indicators Implementation The Environmental Performance Tool Final Considerations
3
Strategic Resource Assessment
To monitor resources, energy consumption and wastage To reduce costs through implementation of invest to save programmes To establish baselines for the monitoring of performance Means to define and report on areas of improvement / decline
4
Sustainability Reporting
To publicly communicate our economic, environmental and social performance. To manage our impact on sustainable development To measure, track and improve our performance on specific issues Promotes transparency and accountability The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI): The world’s de facto standard in sustainability reporting guidelines.
5
Environmental Sustainability - Key Performance Indicators
GRI Environmental Performance Indicators Materials (consumption & percentage recycled) Energy (direct & indirect consumption) Water (consumption and discharges) Biodiversity (protected areas / impacts / management) Emissions & Waste (greenhouse gases, hazardous waste etc) Products and Services (impact of response & third party supply chains) Compliance (fines, complaints, non-monetary sanctions) Transport (direct / indirect - fleet, business, staff etc) Other (investments, efficiency initiatives, risks etc)
6
Environmental Sustainability - Key Performance Indicators
Quantified and normalised metrics, per m2 or per full time employee (FTE) e.g. Energy usage in kWh / GJ Water consumption in m3 Materials / fuel consumption in tonnes / litres Waste disposal in tonnes Carbon quantification in tonnes CO2 equivalents Other – financial £ invested / expended Qualitative metrics (e.g. Biodiversity Action Plans) Tracked annually, with percentage change recorded and performance scored.
7
Implementation Audits, research, surveys, data collection and establishing data gaps Staffing and floor space assessments Choosing appropriate eKPI Core and Non Core GRI Indicators Analysis of information and annual sustainability reporting Sound base for supporting invest to save initiatives Useful for raising awareness Synergy with Environmental Management Systems – continual improvement Synergy with KLOE 3.1 – Use of natural resources
