LEARNING OUTCOMES After completing the Unit, students should be able to: • Judge pathogen attack on forest trees • Evaluate characteristics of fungi, bacteria, virus, phytoplasm and nematodes. • Rate severity of disease in forest species • Compare methods of disease control • Calculate plant disease and loss estimation • Carryout experiments to prepare culture media and isolation & sub culturing of pathogens • Examine disease in forest nursery, plantations of any insect pest attack • Provide solution for minimizing disease in forest species

Practical test (10%) Test includes what has been covered in practicals from week 1-4. Students should be familiar with the lab equipment's and other important laboratory items used in practical. Students to be aware with field monitoring and observations. Students to be able to differentiate among different diseases of plants and causal agents. Students to have basic knowledge on techniques used to detect pathogens in laboratory.

MID TRIMESTER TEST (15%) Coverage from Lecture 1- Lecture 6 will be included in the Mid-Trimester Test.

ASSIGNMENT 1 (10%) Assignment 1: Choice is given to students to select any local Forest tree disease caused by pathogens and design a fact sheet that can be used by foresters. as a guide for future use. The fact sheet should be web designed as a Poster with the use of illustrations e.g photos. The following are to be included: 1. Brief history of the disease 2. The Disease and damages caused 3. Possible problems in Fiji’s forests 4. Recommended solutions to control the disease Example is given for you on the next template.

Assignment 2 (10%) Essay Writing: Students are to select any common forest tree of economic importance to Fiji and choose a common disease that damages or influence the growth of the tree. The diseases can be bacterial, fungal, viral, nematodic or other causal agents. Essay should be formatted properly with inclusion of introduction, body and conclusion. Word limit is words. Recommendation should also be included with clear ideas and examples with evidence of originality. Please refer to marking scheme in Moodle as a guide for assignments.

FINAL EXAMINATION Covers Lecture 1 –Lecture 12 of the Trimester.
Exam questions are based on each lecture objective presented in the lectures.

Referencing Use APA method of referencing and students will lose marks if referencing is not consistent. Students should be familiar with the APA referencing method. If not familiar with the APA referencing method, refer to Moodle as an extract from the Waikato University (New Zealand) is given as your guide.

PLAGiARISM Plagiarism means that you did not acknowledged the author of the original text and you have used his/her ideas as your own. This action is a very serious offence and you are liable for such actions which the University does not entertain. Once found as an offender University penalties will apply and you will be marked zero on any script of assignment you have tendered in for marking.
