Implementation of TURAS database
TURAS Training Programme Management (TPM)
5
TURAS – Charting the Trainee’s journey
6
Next logical step: training progression monitoring
Governance: Training must be quality managed on ongoing basis, monitored, reviewed, evaluated and improved. Training concerns – special measures Critical for success: Monitoring training progression proves that the training is ‘actually working!’ HCS is IMPORTANT: HCS postgraduate community is too important not to be monitored!
7
How do other communities monitor training progression?
Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) GP training reviewed at least once a year: ensures satisfactory progression. ARCP panel: Review carried out at the Annual Review of Competence Progression panel. Panel: 3 members including a lay member. Panel makes a decision as to whether the trainee is achieving progress at the expected level.
8
Within Healthcare Science
Already happening in some areas: E.g. Medical Physics/Clin Eng mid point review Portfolio produced by trainee Discussion with panel Not examination, QM check Limited reach Extend likewise approach to all disciplines to standardise STP Trainees Progression monitored through OLAT PG Bursary applicants 31 bursaries will be issued this year but no check at all
9
What NES would like to do next
Introduce annual review Documentation Review outcome Liase with dept/trainee if required MSF/360 degree appraisal (Doc 50) Questionnaire filled out by trainee and also sent outt o 'rators‘ Inter disciplinary approach Allows trainee insight into strengths/weaknesses
10
Annual review I Aim Process (Doc 20, Doc 21)
Will apply to all holders of NTNs Process (Doc 20, Doc 21) Annual Review completed by supervisor to evaluate quality of training NES may observe a sample of these to audit Separate document completed by trainee, which is confidential Speciality Lead will set date for return of forms and record outcome in TURAS database This will provide evidence for our new auditors
11
Standardising HCS progress monitoring - documentation
12
Annual review II Outcome May be rated as 'Poor' 'Acceptable' or 'Good'
If poor, then may be appropriate to trigger NES special measures principle in order to resolve any issues If trainee confidentially raises a concern, it may be appropriate for NES Speciality Lead to assist in resolution .
13
Annual Review - Discussion
Does the group think this is a good idea? Is an annual review viable? Who is best placed to carry out the assessments? How can information be collated? How do we proceed if any issues are raised (particularly by trainee)? (Doc 21) .
14
MSF I Questionnaire based tool used to collect colleagues opinions on trainee performance and professional behaviour Provides data for evaluation and reflection (Doc 50) Multi-disciplinary approach Currently not mandatory but used for those in STP scheme Can we replicate for others? If so, what areas should feedback cover? .
15
MSF Discussion What is your experience of MSF? Is it a useful/necessary tool? Has anyone used MSF within OLAT? What areas should be covered? Should ‘unable to answer’ option be included? Should there be a question on health and wellbeing? .
16
NES Trainee handbook I Describes training process and responsibilities of individuals involved (Doc 30) Produced for all in the HCS community Clinical Scientist STP trainees Clinical Scientist non-STP trainees Independent equivalence candidates Bursary supported PGs Outlines role of NES in supporting training Commission training Provide CPD opportunities Programme management and Quality Monitoring .
17
NES Trainee handbook II
Introduces trainees to NTNs and TURAS NES short courses and additional learning via NES portal and NES Knowledge Network NES Special Measures Principle for trainees in difficulty Speciality Leads for advice and support Details on Progression Monitoring as discussed Also provides links to Regulatory and professional bodies and other key agencies Information on NHS HCS careers .
