1 Ovulation/Menstruation
Bell Ringer: Write down any questions you might have about menstruation

2 Ovulation Ovulation is when a mature egg is released from the ovary, pushed down the fallopian tube, and is available to be fertilized. Approximately every month an egg will mature within one of your ovaries. As it reaches maturity, the egg is released by the ovary where it enters the fallopian tube to make its way towards waiting sperm and the uterus.

3 Ovulation Continued… The lining of the uterus has thickened to prepare for the fertilized egg. If no conception occurs, the uterine lining, as well as blood, will be shed. The shedding of an unfertilized egg and the uterine wall is the time of menstruation.

4 Menstruation Woman’s monthly bleeding
When you menstruate, your body sheds the lining of the uterus (womb). Menstrual blood flows from the uterus through the small opening in the cervix and passes out of the body through the vagina

Light/Heavy Pads Regular/Super Tampons Use regular tampons on the lightest day of your period/Super tampons for the heavier days of your period Using a super tampon on one of your lighter days on your period increases your risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)

10 Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)
Rare but sometimes a deadly disease. TSS is caused by bacteria that can produce toxins. If your body can't fight the toxins, your immune (body defense) system reacts and causes the symptoms of TSS

11 TSS Symptoms If you have any of these symptoms of TSS while using tampons, take the tampon out, and contact your doctor right away: Sudden high fever (over 102 degrees) Muscle aches Diarrhea Vomiting Dizziness and/or fainting Sunburn-like rash Sore throat Bloodshot eyes

12 “Do I Smell?” Not taking care of your body, especially during your period, can result in a foul odor Change your pads or tampons frequently, shower or bathe daily, and wear clean clothes Avoid Douches, Wipes, and Feminine Sprays Can cause an allergic reaction or irritation Your vagina has its own natural cleaning system that flushes out bacteria

13 Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS)
Physical and Emotional Symptoms girls might get right before their period If you have PMS, you might experience… food cravings depression or feeling blue irritability mood swings acne bloating fatigue backaches sore breasts headaches

14 Cramps Many of you may experience abdominal cramps the first few days of your period Caused by the chemicals in our bodies that make the uterus contract If you’re in pain, medicine (ibuprofen) might help Believe it or not EXERCISE helps cramps! If you have severe cramps that keep you home from school or from doing stuff with your friends, or if over the counter medications aren't working, visit your doctor for advice.
