2 What is an earthquake? Earthquakes are the shaking, rumbling or rolling of the earth’s surface caused by large movements of tectonic plates. The Hypocenter is where the earthquake starts with energy built up. Tectonic plates are always constantly moving

3 Khawhai, India Magnitude: 5.6
On November 21, 2014 at 12:44 A.M Local time an earthquake struck on the Indian and Eurasian plates which made the Indian plate collide underneath the Eurasian plate. There were no reported injuries and only the cities of Khawahi, Serchhip and Aizwal felt the earthquake the most, but it was only just a light shake.

4 Central Visayas, Philippines Magnitude: 7.2
Three weeks before Typhoon Haiyan hit, A deadly 7.2 magnitude earthquake shook Central Visayas on the morning of October 15, Researchers described it as the strongest earthquake to hit the region in 20 years, with it’s epicenter based in Bohol Island of the Philippines. It was estimated that 3.2 million people have been affected by the disaster. Claimed 222 lives - Injured 976 persons - with 8 people reported missing. 72,996 living in evacuation centers! 283,042 living out of evacuation centers in fear of going in concrete buildings. Atmosphere – The quake changed the air density, Biosphere – Before the quake many people had vegetables, animals, poultry and other essential needs after they were left with nothing. One family stated out of the 70 chickens they had, only 5 survived. Grief still hangs over Bohol. Churches, homes and government offices are still destroyed a year later on October 15, 2014 with some not even to begun talk on rebuilding.

5 Rann of Kutch, India Magnitude: 8.2
This Earthquake occurred at about 6:45 to 6:50 local time on June 16, 1819 for 5 minutes. It had an estimated 7.7 to 8.2 on the moment magnitude scale. Areas affected were Gujarat, India. It triggered a tsunami and caused at least 1,543 deaths. The earthquake caused an area of subsidence to that formed the Sindri lake and a local zone of uplift to the north about 40 mph, 3 miles wide and 6m high that dammed the Puram river. The District of Gujarat lies about 250 miles from plate boundaries between the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate, tectonic is effected by the continuing continental collision along this specific boundary. 6 Northern Sumatra, Indonesia Magnitude: 8.6
The giant 2004 Sumatra earthquake ruptured the greatest fault length of any recorded earthquake, This earthquake had a distance of 900 miles, (longer than the state of California) Rather than tearing the land apart all at once, the rupture started beneath the epicenter and progressed northward along the fault. The whole rupture lasted about 10 minutes. • Lives Lost: 1,300 (Many were injured) Monday, March 28, 2004 at 7:58 AM local time The earthquake generated a small tsunami that caused a lot of damage. It was the 3rd most powerful earthquake in Indonesia since 1965. Earthquake lasted for about two minutes. There were 8 major after shocks, measuring between 5.5 and 6.0

7 Preparedness & Safety Become aware of fire evacuation and earthquake safety plans for all of the buildings you occupy regularly. Learn how to shut off the gas valves in your home and keep a wrench handy for that purpose. Make sure your home is securely anchored to its foundation Brace overhead light fixtures. Keep a flashlight and sturdy shoes by each person’s bed in case the earthquake strikes in the middle of the night. Pick safe places in each room of your home, workplace and/or school. A safe place could be under a piece of furniture or against an interior wall away from windows, bookcases or tall furniture that could fall on you.
