1 Do Now: Quiz HW: Problem Set
Aim: How can we use kinematics charts or G.U.E.S.S to help us solve motion problems? Do Now: Quiz HW: Problem Set

2 Rapid Fire Stations In 3 groups you will work together to solve a kinematics problem. You have 30 seconds to solve it and then must pass it on with any work finished to the next group.

3 Problem 1 An airplane cruising at 200 m/s decelerates at the rate of 7 m/s2 for 20 seconds. Calculate the distance that the airplane travels during the 20 seconds. d = 2600 m

4 Problem 2 A car traveling 88 km/hr is 110 m behind a truck traveling 75 km/hr. How long will it take the car to reach the truck? 88 km/hr – 75 km/hr = 13 km/hr 13 km/hr = 0.110km/t t = hr = 30.5 sec

5 Problem 3 A ball player catches a ball 3 seconds after throwing it vertically upward. With what speed did he throw it and what height did it reach? Using t = 1.5 sec at top Vf = 0 m/s at top Vi = 15 m/s d = 11.0 m

6 Tricky Speed vs. Velocity Problems
Scalar Vector DISTANCE/time DISPLACEMENT/time

7 Calculate the car’s average SPEED
A car travels around a corner by traveling 50 meters east, then 50 meters north. It makes the trip in 50 seconds. Calculate the car’s average SPEED Distance = 100m Distance = ? Total time = 50s

8 Calculate the car’s average VELOCITY
A car travels around a corner by traveling 50 meters east, then 50 meters north. It makes the trip in 50 seconds. Calculate the car’s average VELOCITY Displacement = ? Displacement = 70.7m Time = 50s

9 Tricky Speed and Velocity
Calculate the average speed and average velocity of a complete round trip in which the out going 250 km is covered at 95 km/h, followed by a one hour lunch break and the return 250 km is covered at 55 km/h. Total distance = 500 m 250m/t1 = 95 km/hr t1 = 2.63 hr 250m/t2 = 55 km/hr t2 = 4.55 hr Average speed = 500m/( )hr = 61 km/hr Average velocity = 0 km/hr

10 A horse canters away from its trainer in a straight line, moving 116 m away in 14 seconds. It then turns and gallops halfway back in 4.8 seconds. Calculate its average speed and its average velocity for the entire trip, using “away from the trainer” as the positive direction. Remember the difference between displacement and distance!
