Glacier at Work– Lesson 3
Lesson Aim : To examine how Glaciers shaped the landscape
2
Glaciers at work Copy the following notes neatly into your book:
Glaciers don’t just sit there they flow. As they flow, they scrape and shape the landscape like giant bulldozers. They do three jobs: They pick up and erode material They carry it away, or transport it Then they drop or deposit it ERODE TRANSPORT DEPOSIT

Look closely at your diagram sheet.
1. Use your laminated sheet to complete the labels on your Erosion diagram. 2. What are Striations? Striations are scratches cut deep into rocks as a glacier slides over them. The striations are made by the rock fragments carried along in the ice.

Use the information below diagram 1 to complete this paragraph:
Freeze-________weathering makes __________ easier. There is always water under a _________because of the weight and pressure of the ice above. Water flows into _________ in the rock. This reduces pressure and the ice ______________. The ice ____________ and breaks the rock apart. It also re-freezes around chunks of ________. As the ice moves _______________ it drags chunks of rock with it. It uses this rock to ___________ bits of rock off the valley side. Words to choose from to complete your paragraph: cracks plucking re-freezes expands rock thaw downhill scrape glacier X

Use the information below diagram 1 to complete this paragraph:
Freeze-_thaw weathering makes __plucking _ easier. There is always water under a _glacier_because of the weight and pressure of the ice above. Water flows into _cracks_ in the rock. This reduces pressure and the ice _re-freezes__. The ice _expands _ and breaks the rock apart. It also re-freezes around chunks of _rock_. As the ice moves __downhill __ it drags chunks of rock with it. It uses this rock to _scrape bits of rock off the valley side.

Complete the labels on the Transport diagram.
