Year 7 Graphics – Crating
Objective: To understand how to produce an object using the crating method Outcome: To be able to use building elements and views to communicate and represent our design ideas. Starter Look at these 2 cubes. What is different about them? If had to draw the next object below which one would be better to use as a starting point?

Crating is a method of drawing a 3D object in isometric inside a crate or wireframe. It helps us to draw things accurately, and consider all views even if we cannot see them. Crating grid paper can be used to help draw in Crating What angle is isometric and crating done in?

Process: 1st Draw the cube/ cuboid as wireframe, so that you see all the lines 2nd Make sure that if the object is consistent of the same, whatever you do at the front you do at the back 3rd Then either add or subtract from the relevant faces, and repeat step 2. front back

Isometric Paper Helps you draw objects using the crating method. Each triangle or dot is angled to be 30° and at a 10 mm spacing. If you are drawing at scale 1:1 what does this mean?

Task 1: On the dotted isometric paper draw: A wireframe cube H20mm x L20mm xD20mm Then you are going to do the “convex shape technique” What does convex and wireframe mean? Draw a convex curve or arc in the top right quadrant of the front face. Then do the same on the top right quadrant of the back face. Then join the top end of the first arc to the second arc and then do the same for the bottom point. Then draw the outline to finish the entire shape. H L D

Task 2: Using what you have learnt, you are now going to demonstrate the concave technique. Draw the same wireframe cube H20mm x L20mm xD20mm Draw a concave curve or arc in the top right quadrant of the front face. Then do the same on the top right quadrant of the back face. Then join the top end of the first arc to the second arc and then do the same for the bottom point. You can then draw another concave arc in the bottom left quadrant of front and back face. Then draw the outline to finish the entire shape. Why do you only outline one of the bottom arc?

Task 3: Using what you have learnt, you are now going to demonstrate the subtract technique. Draw the same wireframe cube H20mm x L20mm xD20mm Draw a “L” in the top right hand quadrant of the front face Then do the same on the top right quadrant of the back face. Then join the top end of the first L to the second L and then do the same for the bottom point. Then draw the outline to finish the entire shape.

Task 4: Pick one of the above techniques (convex, concave and subtract), this time you are going to double the size, so you draw 60 x 60 x 60mm cube twice. Can you repeat the technique, and then shade it correct marking the LS (light source) for the first object. The second cube, pick a technique to do then apply a wooden surface texture afterwards.

Plenary: Show me the answer Using your planner, use green if think the statement is true, red if false and amber if you don’t know Crating is drawing an object. Crating is normally done in isometric view. There are many different techniques within Crating to create a shape. Sometimes when you draw an object you cant see a line or a view. Whatever you do to the front face you repeat for the back face when crating.
