1 Media Studies Exam Prep
Firstly, MASSIVE apologies for not being here today for your last lesson before the exam. I am at my Nan’s funeral and I really can’t miss it. Secondly, I will be holding a last minute revision session after school on Monday here in EM19. Please, please, please do all come. I can answer any questions you have from today, go over anything you’re unsure about AND there may even be some lovely treats in it for you! Thirdly, I have put this Powerpoint on the Revision Hub so that you can look at it in your own time for revision. So, Let’s get on with today then. Here is what we will be looking at: Exam Layout & your PPE papers Getting theory into your answers Opening Credits of Game Shows Going over the brief one last time

2 Media Studies Exam Prep
1. Exam Layout & your PPE Papers Make sure you have your marked PPE papers and the exam assessment criteria in front of you

3 Look at the marks you got in the PPE and your coursework marks opposite.
Now look at the assessment criteria and where you were achieving for each question. If this was the real exam, would you have maintained your excellent coursework grade? How many more marks do you need to get in the real exam?

4 Media Studies Exam Prep
Here is a past exam paper. The topic is different, but you get the idea… There will always be 4 questions worth 15 marks each. As the paper is 1 hour and 30 mins long, this means you should be spending NO MORE THAN 20 mins on each question. You MUST keep to the time limit. Many of you lost lots of marks in the PPE because you didn’t manage your time properly. The better prepared you are, the quicker you will be able to answer the questions.

5 Media Studies Exam Prep
Look at Question 1 on your PPE papers and compare them to this one. Question 1 will always be looking for your understanding of the genre. In your case, TV Game Shows, so get as much about the genre in here as possible. As here, it will list 2 or 3 things ‘they’ think are required to make a Game Show successful and then ask you to respond. You MUST address all of these bullet points and refer to two or more examples of existing Game Shows in this answer as evidence. This is where you use your Case Studies. You can more-or-less plan what you intend to say in this answer before the exam as you know what it will be about.

6 Media Studies Exam Prep
Look at the assessment criteria for Question 1 In this Question, you will be marked according to: How well you assess the success of TV Game Shows Your knowledge of the purpose of TV Game Shows & how well you respond to the bullet points in the question How well you use examples from real Game Shows (your case studies) How well you have researched Game Shows in your preparation How accurate your writing is and how well you use media terminology

7 Media Studies Exam Prep
Look at Your answer to Question 1 on the PPE and the comments I have written.. Here is Question 1 from your PPE: Try to create an argument here in your answer… On one hand: Agree with what the question is saying and use examples to show how what they have written in the bullet points DOES make a successful game show BUT… On the other hand: Use examples to show that a game show that does not have the elements in the bullet points can also be successful See next page for example…

8 Media Studies Exam Prep
Look at Your answer to Question 1 on the PPE and the comments I have written.. We believe that a successful game show must include the following in order to effectively appeal to audiences: Bright and colourful sets A charismatic host Challenging tasks How successful are TV game shows in providing this? Give at least two examples taken from your research The game show Total Wipeout has a bright and colourful set. This is successful in attracting the target audience of… because… It also has a charismatic host who successfully attracts the target audience because… It also has Challenging tasks. These are successful in attracting the target audience by… However, a Game Show doesn’t have to have these features to be successful in attracting its target audience. For example… It depends on who the target audience are and what their needs and expectations are… Firstly, agree with what the question is saying, giving examples of at least one game show and how it DOES include the elements in the question Secondly, disagree with what the question is saying, giving examples of at least one game show and how it is successful WITHOUT including them IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHO THE TARGET AUDIENCE ARE AND WHAT THEIR NEEDS AND EXPECTATIONS ARE (AUDIENCE THEORIES)

9 Media Studies Exam Prep
Getting Theory in… Whether a show needs these elements to be successful depends on the target audience it is aimed at When looking at your examples, think about the Uses and Gratifications audiences get from the Show – do they want/need bright sets, etc? Also think about Zillman’s Mood Management Theory – how does this apply to the target audiences of the shows you are using as examples and what does it say about whether the points made in the question are necessary to make it successful? Remember you can disagree with the question! We believe that a successful game show must include the following in order to effectively appeal to audiences: Bright and colourful sets A charismatic host Challenging tasks How successful are TV game shows in providing this? Give at least two examples taken from your research

10 Media Studies Exam Prep
Look at Question 2 on your PPE papers and compare them to this one. This question will probably be where they ask you to share your ideas for your Game Show. They may give you bullet points to respond to as they have here, or they may not. Again, you can plan this answer before the exam and practise writing it in 20 minutes.

11 Media Studies Exam Prep
Look at the assessment criteria for Question 2 In this Question, you will be marked according to: How well you have used the conventions of TV Game Shows in your show How well you have explained the format of your show How well you have covered what the brief asked you How accurate your writing is and how well you use media terminology Your reasons for including what you have included How well you have given your target audience what they want.

12 Media Studies Exam Prep
Look at Your answer to Question 2 on the PPE and the comments I have written.. Here is Question 2 from your PPE: In this answer you must include… A clear description of the running order of what happens in your show from start to finish A description of how you use the conventions of Game Shows Reference to all the requirements set out in the brief Reasons why you have made the decisions you have An explanation of how your ideas will attract the target audience 2. Give us your ideas for a new TV Game Show. We need: Descriptions of setting/s, characters or plot A justification telling us how your ideas would engage with the target audience.

13 Media Studies Exam Prep
2. Give us your ideas for a new TV Game Show. We need: Descriptions of setting/s, characters or plot A justification telling us how your ideas would engage with the target audience. Getting Theory in… When you are explaining how your ideas appeal to your target audience, think about what uses and gratifications your target audience of families, and different members of the family, will get from the show.

14 Media Studies Exam Prep
Look at Questions 3 and 4 on your PPE papers and compare them to these ones. One of these questions will ask you to explain your ideas for making your Game Show interactive and one will be the practical question. The brief stated specifically that you would need to use social media and e-Media to involve and increase your audience throughout the first series of the show, so you must have clear and detailed ideas for how you are going to do this in the interactivity question. Again, you can plan this answer before the exam and practise writing it in 20 minutes.

15 Media Studies Exam Prep
Look at the assessment criteria for Question 4 In the Question where you are asked to give your ideas for interactivity, you will be marked according to: How well you explain and understand how your ideas will appeal to the target audience How many appropriate ideas you have – you should have 3 or more clear and appropriate ideas How well you have done what the brief asked How accurate your writing is and how well you use media terminology

16 Media Studies Exam Prep
Look at Your answer to Question 4 on the PPE and the comments I have written.. Here is Question 4 from your PPE: In this answer you must include… 3 appropriate ideas. As the brief specified that you needed to use e-Media / Social Media, ensure that you come up with 3 clear ideas for this Understanding of the codes & conventions of Game Shows Response to the requirements made in the brief An explanation of how your ideas will attract the target audience 4. Suggest three other ways in which we can increase the engagement of our target audience with the Game Show. At least one of your suggestions must show us how we can make use of our e-Media platform. Explain why easch of your suggestions will appeal to our target audience.

4. Suggest three other ways in which we can increase the engagement of our target audience with the Game Show. At least one of your suggestions must show us how we can make use of our e-Media platform. Explain why easch of your suggestions will appeal to our target audience. Getting Theory in… When you are explaining how your ideas appeal to your target audience, think about what uses and gratifications your target audience of families, and different members of the family, will get from the show.

18 Media Studies Exam Prep
Look at Questions 3 and 4 on your PPE papers and compare them to these ones. The other one of these questions will ask you to provide a practical piece of work I have a hunch that they will ask you to storyboard the opening sequence to your game show, but I could be wrong so make sure you are prepared for other eventualities, such as design your set or website front page. Remember – the brief said that it must be obvious from the start of the opening title sequence that this is a show for families, so you must be able to show that in your sequence. Again, you should plan this answer before the exam and practise drawing it in 20 minutes.

19 Media Studies Exam Prep
Look at the assessment criteria for Question 3 In the practical Question, you will be assessed according to: How well you know and understand the design conventions of the form you have been asked to recreate (ie. Opening title sequences) How appropriate your design is for the form and the target audience How well you have targeted the specified audience of families and how creative you have been in doing it.

20 Media Studies Exam Prep
Look at Your answer to Question 3 on the PPE and the comments I have written.. Here is Question 3 from your PPE: In this answer you must include… The number of boards specified in the question. All elements of each board must be completed: shot number, type of shot edit, dialogue, sound, camera movement and timing. Imaginative and original ideas that are suitable for an opening sequence The brief states that they want the show to be clearly aimed at families from the very start of the opening sequence, so you need to ensure that this is obvious. 3. Show us your ideas for the opening sequence of the game show. You should complete the 10 frames of the storyboard design sheet enclosed

21 Media Studies Exam Prep
2. Getting Theory into your answers Make sure you have the Audience Theory sheet in front of you

22 Media Studies Exam Prep
Look at the sheets on the following audience theories and remind yourself of them: Uses and Gratifications Theory Zillman’s Mood Management Theory Recap your understanding of Uses and Gratifications Theory by completing the parts of the table that ask you to relate the uses and gratifications to Game Shows and give examples of game shows that respond the those uses and gratifications. 10 mins

23 Media Studies Exam Prep
Now look back at slides 9, 13 & 17 to look again at how you can get this theory into each written answer.

24 Media Studies Exam Prep
3. Opening Credits of Game Shows Make sure you have

25 Why are Opening Titles important?

26 Title sequences for television series have routinely played a central role in establishing the show's identity. Repeated at the beginning of every new and rebroadcast episode, usually with limited changes over the course of the series' run, they can become highly memorable.  Theme music played during the sequence may be remembered clearly by viewers decades later. A title sequence will at some point badge the show with a typographic logo. The title sequence is produced at the outset of a series, the sequence can include visuals taken from early episodes. They could include short clips of contestants, key moments (for example; in activity oriented game shows they will show shots of exciting / fails and funny moments.

27 We are going to watch the opening titles for a range of programmes.
What conventions are generally introduced in the opening titles? In each case: What are you shown/ introduced to? What has not been introduced so far? From this part of the show alone, what do you understand the show to contain? What media language have the producers used to try and hook the audience? Family Fortunes: The Cube: Total Wipeout: (0-40 secs) The Chase: (30-50 secs)

4. Going over the Brief one Last Time Make sure you have addressed the requirements of the brief. The main points from the brief are on the next page.

29 Media Studies Exam Prep
The show will be shown in Autumn on Saturday evenings in the primetime slot, which is usually between 6-8pm Contestants should be involved in exciting competition It needs to have a clear unique selling point, so it needs to be something original that no other game show has It needs to be engaging and fun for all generations of the family, from children to grandparents Viewers at home must be able to play along with the game; it needs to be interactive and engaging for all the family The focus on the family audience needs to be clear right from the very beginning of the opening title sequence – how can you make sure this is the case? You need to ensure you have researched game shows and thought carefully about what makes them successful Your show needs to recapture the traditional feel of the Saturday night vibe of the whole family sitting down together to watch the show. However, it should still be very modern The show will need to use social media and e-Media to involve the audience with the show by allowing them to interact Social media and Interactive media should also be used to increase the audience in the first season of the show.

30 Media Studies Exam Prep
