Week 1 Housekeeping, introductions, aims, resources, and some Latin!

2 Housekeeping Fire safety: would anyone need assistance?
Fire exits: not the lifts – use external spiral staircase – door in ‘kitchen area’ Fire assembly point 1 class secretary, 2 tables and chairs monitors, 1 laptop monitor and 1 Visualizer monitor please? Actual timing: 75 mins per session, – ? I will be available for chats etc, in social area after each class

Your name Your previous experience of Latin What do you hope to get from the class? What do you think of the Cambridge Latin Course? “I learn best when...” ? Internet access? Able to print off handouts? Any other points worth mentioning?

5 Introductions: Mike Fay
A Romance linguist, mainly French and Spanish Latin O Level plus 3 years of Latin at U3AC Previously a comprehensive school teacher, lecturer at ARU, translation tutor at Imperial College and UCL Winding down as a professional translator My aims: enjoy teaching and learning, become a better Latinist, cooperate with other Latinists, ....

6 Aims: sound reasonable?
Complete CRC II by end of term 3 (mainly involving, reading, translating into English, grammar learning and exercises) Gain some familiarity with Classical Latin pronunciation Work on some more formal grammar patterns, explanations, memorization, practice etc. Work on some authentic readings e.g. inscriptions Some exposure to everyday Latin, ‘Latin as a world language’, Latin for local and family history, Latin in science Provide some pointers to further study of Roman Britain and Alexandria Provide opportunities to contribute to class and work with other class members

Cambridge Latin Course fourth edition Book II Grammar reference: Benjamin Hall Kennedy, (1962) Kennedy’s Revised Latin Primer, Longman or James Morwood (1999) A Latin Grammar, Oxford, or R M Griffin (1991, 2013) Cambridge Latin Grammar, CUP. Dictionary: Cassell’s Latin Dictionary; Chambers Latin Dictionary.
