Tectonic Plates Climate & Weather Resources
2
Structures of the Earth
The Earth is made up of 3 main layers: Core Mantle Crust Mantle Outer core Inner core Crust
3
Tectonic Plates The Earth’s crust is divided into sections called tectonic plates. The plates float on Earth’s mantle. They are constantly shifting and may move up to 4 inches a year. Each continent rest on these plates. This causes the continents to move slightly each year known as continental drift.

Tectonic Plates The movement of tectonic plates can trigger volcanoes and earthquakes. The Ring of Fire is a circle of volcanoes and earthquakes along the rim of the Pacific Ocean. It exist because large tectonic plates under the ocean slide against each other. 75% of the world’s active and dormant volcanoes are along the Ring of Fire. 90% of the world’s earthquakes are along the Ring of Fire.

Climate Climate is the average condition of the atmosphere over a long period of time. It includes the average temperature, the average precipitation, and the amount of change from one season to another.
8
Climate For example, Alaska has a cold climate but Florida has a warm climate. Factors that affect a regions climate: Latitude Elevation Prevailing winds Ocean currents
9
Weather Weather is the condition of the atmosphere at a particular time. It includes the temperature, precipitation, and humidity for a particular day or week.
10
Weather Weather is the 7 day forecast or the daily conditions.
Example: it is 100° in OKC today.

Natural Resources Geographers classify resources into two categories:
Nonrenewable resources Renewable resources
16
Nonrenewable Resources
Limited resources that cannot be replaced. Coal, oil, and natural gas are examples of nonrenewable resources.
17
Renewable Resources Resources that never run out, or a new supply develops over time. Wind, water, and solar power are examples of renewable resources

Why are resources important?
Resources are a part of everyday life. Wars have been fought over resources. Governments make decisions based on resources and access to resources. Country boundary lines have been drawn based on access to resources. Every country needs them, and some are limited.
