2
About CableLabs R&D Consortium chartered to foster innovation in the cable industry 57 member MSOs worldwide 150+ million subscribers Vendor-neutral R&D/lab facilities in Louisville, CO and Sunnyvale, CA Best known for DOCSIS® specifications Extensive research into SDN & NFV with active participation from cable operators and vendors ETSI NFV ISG – NOC Chair OPNFV – Founding member, Silver End-User Director
3
CableLabs involvement with SDN & NFV
Started SDN research in 2012 Former ON.Lab member Pox/mininet/FlowVisor experimentation MSO and vendor use case analysis SDN showed promise, but OpenFlow didn’t look like the right protocol for access network Began NFV research in 2013 Experimenting with ODL in August ‘13 PacketCable Multimedia plugin – COPS protocol to control legacy CMTSs Documentation was non-existant… …code/interfaces kept changing… …but we still had a working demo in 6 weeks Continuing approach with use case analysis, architecture design, and prototyping PCMM plugin (Helium) -> enhancing in Lithium Looking to expand ODL engagement through OPNFV Virtual Business CPE (MEF services) Intent networking

Feedback for ODL Documentation/training/process Technology
Onboarding is challenging Documentation has room for improvement CI/CD toolchain training and integration with our lab AD-SAL->MD-SAL conversion Developer transitions Technology SAL is a big advantage over other controllers Support for legacy devices/protocols Netconf/Restconf/OVSDB/TR-069 better fits for access network than OpenFlow Strong interest in intent projects Current intent projects largely data center focused, and need different structure for access network Layered subscriber model “gold/silver/bronze” tiers of service Parent/kid devices TV vs. Xbox vs. PC vs. tablet (etc.) More “service” APIs – common provisioning regardless of access technology/vendor
