2 Objectives What is haptic reality system?
An application of haptic reality system Functioning of two haptic devices

3 Haptics Haptic technology, or haptics, is a tactile feedback technology that takes advantage of a user's sense of touch by applying forces, vibrations, and/or motions to the user. Haptics is a recent enhancement to virtual environments allowing users to “touch” and feel the simulated objects with which they interact. The study of haptics emerged from advances in virtual reality. To be able to interact with an environment, there must be feedback. This type of feed back is called haptic feedback.

4 Applications Current applications Future applications
Teleoperators and simulators Computer and video games Mobile consumer technologies Haptics in virtual reality Research Medicine Robotics Arts and design Actuators Future applications Holographic interaction Future medical applications

5 Applications contd.. Current applications:
Example of current applications-computer and video games: Some simple haptic devices are common in the form of game controllers, in particular of joysticks and steering wheels. For example steering wheels, that are programmed to provide a "feel" of the road. As the user makes a turn or accelerates, the steering wheel responds by resisting turns or slipping out of control. Another concept of force feedback is that of the ability to change the temperature of the controlling device. This would prove especially efficient for prolonged usage of the device. However, due to the high cost of such a technology and the power drainage it would cause, the closest many manufacturers have come to realizing this concept has been to install air holes or small fans into the device to provide the user's hands with ventilation while operating the device

6 Applications contd.. Future applications:
Example of future applications-Holographic interaction: Researchers at the University of Tokyo are currently working on adding haptic feedback to holographic projections. The feedback allows the user to interact with a hologram and receive tactile response as if the holographic object were real. The research uses ultrasound waves to create a phenomenon called acoustic radiation pressure, which provides tactile feedback as users interact with the holographic object. The haptic technology does not affect the hologram, or the interaction with it, only the tactile response that the user perceives

7 Haptic devices A haptic device is one that involves physical contact between the computer and the user, usually through an input/output device, such as a joystick or data gloves, that senses the body's movements. By using haptic devices, the user can not only feed information to the computer but can receive information from the computer in the form of a felt sensation on some part of the body. This is referred to as a haptic interface

8 NOVINT FALCON

9 NOVINT FALCON Contd… The Novint Falcon is an entirely new type of game controller. Replacing your mouse or joystick, the Falcon is, essentially, a small robot that lets you experience true virtual touch unlike any controller in history

10 Functionality of Novint Falcon
The Novint Falcon lets you control a game in three dimensions, and also lets you feel high-fidelity three-dimensional force feedback. The Falcon controller moves right and left, forwards and backwards, like a mouse, but also moves up and down. When you hold the Falcon’s detachable Grip and move your cursor to interact with a virtual object, environment, or character, motors in the device turn on and are updated approximately 1000 times a second, letting you feel texture, shape, weight, dimension, and dynamics. The Falcon lets you control and interact with games in more realistic way, allowing you to develop real physical skill and muscle memory, adding a new dimension to gaming.

11 HAPTIC BRAILLE

12 Haptic Braille contd…

13 Functionality of Haptic Braille
The Haptic Braille is a concept device that would be incredibly useful for folks with a visual disability. The device is capable of scanning ordinary text and converting it into Braille on the surface of this mouse-like device. If this device were to be made a reality, it would make it much easier for folks with a visual disability to read most of what sighted people can..

14 Functionality of Haptic Braille
The core of each refreshable braille display device is a proprietary technology using printed circuit boards (PCB). Braille Screen contains a single 30cm square PCB. The primary technology uses microluidics to actuate a membrane to form the Braille dots. Each dot consists of: Microheater at one end Flexible membrane covering the cell Phase change material within the cell
