STEP 1: Read the “Context”
STEP 2:
1st – remember that the league of nations, created after WWI, was a failure and helped contribute to wwII
2nd – how did the ‘big three’ plan to avoid the mistakes of their predecessors? In other words, what could they do to help prevent a third world war?
3rd – In groups of 3 or 4, examine both the Preamble (pg 2) and the Poster (pg 3)…then discuss the answers to the questions listed on page 1
4th – Be ready to share with the class

Two alliances formed at the beginning of the Cold War – NATO, created in 1947, and the Warsaw Pact, created in 1950.
NATO was led by the United States; the Warsaw Pact was lEd by the Soviet Union.
The US, Great Britain, France, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Portugal all formed NATO – a military alliance that sought to “…promote stability and well- being in the North Atlantic Area.”
After West Germany joined NATO in 1955, the Soviet Union and its satellite states in Eastern Europe (Bulgaria, Hungary, East Germany, Poland, Romania, and Czechoslovakia) joined together as their own military alliance, the Warsaw Pact.

Review selected sections of the NATO and Warsaw Pact treaties using the chart that organizes excerpts from the two treaties by topic.
Complete the “Analysis” column of the chart…which asks for similarities or differences between the two treaties
On a separate sheet of paper, consider the potential impact of these two military alliances on international relations.
Will they [the military alliances] expand tensions between countries or will they promote greater peace and stability? Explain…use at least three specific quotes from the treaties in your 150 word (approx 10 sentences)
